Why Do The Bills Like Backup Centers as Starters?

Recommended Posts

Because everyone is over priced in FA and we would rather take 5 overpriced mediocre players than 2 overpriced good players- just like your Uncle would rather pay $75 for a chair that smelled like cream cheese and cigarettes at a garage sell instead of paying 15% higher than average for a new chair at Rosa's.

Exactly, "that guy from the Ravens" (his name is Brown) was so in demand because he was such a great Centre that his own team didn't want him back, and the onlyteam willing to give him an offer was the Rams, where he desperatly tried to not sign with, but had to when no one stepped upto give him a comparible offer. But of course he is the only choice to be a starting centre.

You do realise that the guy they did sign has been a starter before and played well, well enough his old team did want him back but couldn't safford to sign him, and he onlylost the starting job because the other guy played better. When he came in, I belive their running game actually improved a little bit, and he has experience working against the jets 3-4 nose tackle (probably the better nose tackle the Bills face in their division) when Jenkins played in Carolina.

There are many ways to address FA's. Overpay for top tier guys that are not guaranteed, or may be on their last legs and are living off their name, or sign backups/second tier guys with potential that may be able to step in and be an improvement over what you had.

or instead of constantly overpaying for other teams castoffs, the Bills could actually spend some premium picks on the OL and build with players who actually are talented enough to be NFL starters.

Sure, they could do that too, and usuallythats one of the preffered methods, but theres never a guarantee on any player that they will amount to anything, for example, Mike Williams, who was the 4th overall pick and now is a backup or out of the league

you are correct-

the Bills method of overpaying castoffs has worked so much better.

If Donohoe wasn't so much smarter than everyone else, he would have drafted a real LT in McKinney with that #4 pick.

just because Williams busted is no excuse to never draft another OL.

The good teams do it and actually have some talent evaluators who can recognize who can play and who is a turd before spending top picks.
