jester43 Posted February 22, 2009 Share Posted February 22, 2009 I know he was all but run out of Tampa, but just watching the Combine coverage, I can't help but wonder what kind of HC he'd be for the Bills.He's won a Super Bowl, took Oakland far, did wonders with Gannon (maybe he could do the same with Edwards)... Yes, some players didn't like him but consider: lots of Bills players LOVE their coach, and where has it got them? Just curious what you all think. i would take him in a heartbeat...but there would be some major upheaval around here while he is running out all the softie players we have accumulated. How many coaches have led two different franchises to championships? It's one thing to want a guy like Shanahan because he won a couple of Super Bowls and, as an offensive specialist, at least led Denver teams with good offenses the past decade or so. But Gruden's ring is as a product of a fortunate matchup in the Super Bowl being his ex-team, an Eagles team that excelled at the art of choke, and MONTE KIFFIN. Seriously, I'd like to know where Gruden's Bucs and Billick's Ravens (both alleged offensive gurus) ranked in the league in terms of offensive during their reigns as head coach. thewildrabbit Posted February 23, 2009 Share Posted February 23, 2009 Bill Belichick was asked at the combine what he thinks of all the coaching changes this off season and he stated "it doesn't seem right to not have people like Mike Shanahan, John Gruden, Brian Billick and Steve Mariucci to not be head coaches in the NFL. Guys that he has coached against, and at times not very well. It won't surprise me at all to see most those ex head coaches get new HC jobs next off season after some the new / old coaches fail this up coming season.Plus Bill Cowher will land in either Dallas, Washington or Carolina depending on how those teams do and which owner bids the most $$$ John Harbaugh made the playoffs last season with the Ravens because of OC Cam Cameron, and mostly because of Rex Ryan's defense. Ryan is with the Jets now and Ray Lewis and other players will change teams, doubtful the Ravens will be in the playoffs again next season. Jets- Rex Ryan-ex Raven DC Browns- Eris Mangini* -ex Jets HC Colts-Jim Caldwell- ex Colts QB coach Broncos Josh McDaniels- ex Pats OC Chiefs-Todd Haley-ex ariz OC Raiders-Tom Cable- ex Raiders OL coach Lions-Jim Schwartz- ex Titan DC Rams-Steve Spagnuolo- ex NYG DC Seahawks-Jim Mora*-ex Falcon HC ex Seahawk & asst HC sec coach Buccaneers- Raheem Morris ex Bucs DB coach I just don't see many of these teams with new untested head coaches getting their teams in the playoffs. *Mora and Mangini have previous head coaching experience and are inheriting decent teams so they 'could' get into the playoffs. Well just to play devil's advocate: Two of last year's worst to first playoff teams, the Atlanta Falcons and the Miami Dolphins had rookie head coaches and both of these teams also had rookie General Managers. I agree that Caldwell and Mangini are walking into better situations talent-wise than the others but turnarounds can happen very quickly in this league and plenty of arguments can be made as to why Caldwell and Mangini will fail. Answer: ONCE! and both seasons were 9-7 (2007 and 2008) and he only made the playoffs in 2007 because in 2008 he had a bigger melt down than DJ and lost out to miss the plyaoffs despite being 9-3 and leading his division. If a coach is an a hole, but the players respect him they'll still play hard for him and execute his game plan (see: Johnson, Jimmy), but if a coach gets on the bad side of enough players they'll stop listening to him altogether and that will affect the team's performance. I don't care if the players hate the HC so much he has to hire security guards 24/7. If he can turn this buch of underachievers into winners, we will all sing his praises to the high heavens. Exactly...the players didnt like Coughlin but still respected him and bought into his system. They didnt like the discipline, but they did trust him and now look at them. The players not only dont like Gruden, they dont respect him or trust him. That is the very definition of a coach "losing his team" and you can't win like that.
