Jets release TE Baker

Posted: Adam Schefter | Adam Schefter

Last April the Jets drafted a starting tight end. Now they are releasing one.

The Jets have decided to cut tight end Chris Baker rather than paying him the $9 million roster bonus due March 5.

But just because the Jets are releasing Baker now doesn’t mean he will not return to the team. The Jets would like to re-sign him, and Baker would welcome the idea of returning to the team. But before he does, he will test the market, see what other teams are offering and then make his decision.

But the Jets have made theirs - they are releasing Baker

2008 Scouting Report - Scouts Inc.

Grade: 68 | Key

Alert: None

Comment: Baker is a short, thickly-built tight end who isn't a powerful blocker at the point of attack, but has enough athleticism to be an effective target in the passing game. He was the third-leading receiver who has good foot agility, quickness and balance to be an effective short and intermediate route-runner. He has improved as a route-runner by using his body to get separation. He has good, reliable hands to extend and make receptions away from his body. Baker doesn't have great burst or speed to stretch deep seams and he can be a liability as a run-blocker at the point of attack or anchoring versus bull rushers off the edge. He has developed into a solid football player, but is somewhat one dimensional because he is primarily used as a receiving tight end and wall-off type blocker.

100-90: Elite Player

89-80: Outstanding Player

79-70: Good Starter

69-60: Average Starter

59- 50: Good Backup

49-40: Below Average Backup/Core Special Teamers

Also, Scouts Inc has him rated as their 17th best tight end but the list hasn't been updated since last year. There are people behind him on the list who seem like they've surpassed him this year, for instance Zach Miller, Bo Scaife, Tony Scheffler, and Greg Olsen. Seems like a legitimate starter but not a top line talent.

haha. wasn't it baker that made the big stink about his contract/money last year and the year before?

yes he was.......there is no way he will return to the jets.......he came right out and said they lied to him about redoing his contract......i would sign him....one less position to fill at the draft.........

What would you be willing to pay for him?

It's questionable how much of an upgrade he'd be.
