BuffaloBill Posted February 10, 2009 Posted February 10, 2009 The rationale that they used for Buffalo is that it snows alot (as if we're not used to it by now) and that a lot of people continue to move away. I would argue more strongly that it is the poor economic climate. It is hard to live somewhere when you can't find a job with decent pay and what you do earn you get taxed heavily on. If the US wants to foster growth in "cold cities" and rust belts they should look at changing investment credits and immigration policy to favor these locations. There are boatloads of exceptionally well educated IT and sciences professionalls looking to get to the US. If our government looked at the investment potential of fostering investment that also allowed for professional immigration into the US the situation could change rapidly. Just look north to Toronto or north and west to Vancouver to see those cities are booming due to foreign investment and immigration of highly qualified individuals.
PromoTheRobot Posted February 10, 2009 Author Posted February 10, 2009 Stockton and Modesto should be tied for first on that list. Both towns are cesspools. I like the picture they used for Modesto. An empty field. Is that the best photo they can find? PTR
ricojes Posted February 10, 2009 Posted February 10, 2009 Weather and declining population were the main reasons that Buffalo is #8. It's a weird formula, which even factors in sports teams, so maybe not too surprising Buffalo made the list. Last year NYC and LA were in the top 10. I'm not saying Buffalo is a desirable place to live, but I do think the list is bunch of crap...

Beerball Posted February 10, 2009 Posted February 10, 2009 Watch it buddy. Stockton is a great city. It's the shining jewel of the San Joaquin Valley. putting it squarely in front of Lemoore, Hanford, Fresno, Tulare and Madera!

Buffalo has some good points & some amazing things to see(Niagara Falls) & I think it is a great place to live if you have a 1/2 way decent job. Great place to raise a family. This time of year(especially this winter as it seems like it has been extremely cold) I get the golf itch & always think about moving somewhere I could golf year round instead of the 8 months up here(I like to push the envelope, as long as there is no snow on the ground I try to get out golfing). The latest I ever golfed was December 29th one time. We were at Terry Hills. Temps started out in the 40s & were dropping as we progressed in our round. On the 18th hole it started snowing!!! We finished the hole & the round though & I ended up shooting an 86. Not bad for a guy that could not feel his hands after the 10th hole.

My father-in-law gave me an issue of Golf magazine this past weekend and it was so depressing. I bought a new 3 Wood in September and haven't used it yet!! 2 years ago, I golfed on a beautiful December day. Not a chance of that this year though! You take the good with the bad. I still love this area, but myself, as well as my wife, are fortunate enough to have well paying jobs. Although there are a lot of jobs out there, you just have to dig a bit. The high unemployment issues in Buffalo is mostly because there aren't many jobs available for unqualified individuals. But there are some high paying jobs for educated individuals. Hopefully the Casino and Bass Pro will help some of those numbers.
buckeyemike Posted February 10, 2009 Posted February 10, 2009 Dammit. Cleveland is fourth, although I can't really argue with that. The weather really sucks this winter (although it's 60 degrees today), the politicians are all corrupt, and everybody's leaving.

I thought I would be able to get out at least 2 or 3 more times & try them out. I usually get a round in around thanksgiving & then like you said there is always that nice december day you could get out & play. Not a chance this year. They have sat in the box for the last3 months. I have went up to the dome twice but it is just not the same.
Beerball Posted February 10, 2009 Posted February 10, 2009 You damn right! Man, I don't miss those places at all!
el Tigre Posted February 11, 2009 Posted February 11, 2009 Man, I don't miss those places at all! You've lived in this area?
Beerball Posted February 11, 2009 Posted February 11, 2009 You've lived in this area? Sadly yes. I spent several years living in Lemoore before moving to Roseville. Folks think they know fog don't know sh-- unless they've driven through Tule fog in the middle of the night. I'm now in the Dallas area.

I'm in Stockton and I have family all thru the Valley, including Lemoore. The difference between Lemoore and other towns at the southern end of the Valley and Stockton is the nighttime temperatures. Stockton sits on the edge of the San Joaquin Delta so every night it cools down. A little farther south and it stays hot all night long in the summer. And you ain't kidding about the fog,it gets real thick at times. Overall tho,the Valley really is a pretty good place to live,no matter what these surveys say.
Tcali Posted February 12, 2009 Posted February 12, 2009 As of the last cencus in 2000, Buffalo dropped from the 45th largest metropolis to the 54th. We'll be in the 60s by 2010, and our population will be less than it was in 1900. 2006 census estimate---Buffalo 46th...rochester 49th.....albany 57th.... in 2000 Buffalo was 40th

Stockton has an interesting downtown.....they did a good job with it.....
billsfanmiami(oh) Posted February 12, 2009 Posted February 12, 2009 It's always about the weather in Buffalo. I was surprised Memphis was so bad. Have you ever been to Memphis? I am there many times throughout the year for work and the only positives are pork barbeque and Beale street. It's really bad.
ExiledInIllinois Posted February 12, 2009 Posted February 12, 2009 Chicago isn't that bad... I live on the south end towards Indiana and it is quite pleasant... The daily drive is worse in BFLO. Here I zip on the expressway and zip off... A 20 mile commute only takes me 15-25 minutes. I would say they factored in the west to north suburbs... You couldn't pay me enough to live up in that over-priced rat race.
