Why Ralph will spend big on Free agents this year

I know that this would go against history, but I think a few things are in play that might fuel a major spending spree for the Bills this year.

Fan support was at an all time low at the end of the season b/c of the teams collapse and the extension of DJ. Since this fall the economy has detriorated further making tickets sales look bleak for 2009. Ralph needs to build excitement from a business perspective and Brandon is a marketing man that recognizes this need.

The Toronto experiment enters season two. The first season was mildly successful. Canadian fans gravitate towards the big stars, did you see all NFL jerseys in the stands. Ralph has pocketed the infusion of cash generated because of the Toronto games and now needs a marquee player to get these fans attention.

Ralph's induction into the HOF is huge. He will be on a whirlwind tour this spring and summer rubbing elbows will all the NFLs greats. The Bills will be the main attraction at the HOF weekend with two inductees and the current team playing in the game. This man is in the twilight of his life and is being recognized as one of the NFLs best owners. He will want to finish on top in all ways possible, and not allow his frugal ways detract from his and the teams national spotlight. Peer pressure, pride, and the opportunity to put a final stamp on his epitaph are powerful motivators.

Lastlly, he as a solid foundation to build on. This team is not that far away and there is cap room to allow for unprecedented free agent spending. If this money is spent correctly, Ralph can position the Bills for one last Super Bowl run in his lifetime.

We might just have the perfect storm brewing to create a great time to be a Bills fan!!! What a roller coaster ride it is!!

Not to beat an already dead and beaten horse here.....but do you honestly think that Jauron is capable of leading this team into the playoffs, even with FA acquisitions?

Jauron is lucky he can lead this team in and out of the locker room on Sundays.

What specific incentives would drive Ralph to spend any $ at all? Can the stadium hold more people? Would the team receive more $ from TV? Will the team be worth more when sold following Ralph's demise?

Given the context within which Ralph currently makes decisions, why would he spend a dime?

Because he has more money than he has time.

there is no reason ralph would avoid spending real money on a competent GM and coaching staff and then turn around and throw it away on free agents.

Not to be sarcastic here, but you're assuming that Ralph is following your line of reasoning. At this point, it would appear as though Ralph believes Jauron, at least, is competent enough to keep. If that's the case, then he may very well believe that a few key players are the proverbial missing pieces of the puzzle. Not the GM and coaching staff. We shall see.....

I believe Ralph's support of DJ is genuine and not a cost influenced. He has already gone on record saying the team doesnt have enough talent. Unless you truly believe is ENTIRE motivation is to screw the fan base by sucking as much profit from the franchise before he passes, a lot of indicators point towards a big FA offseason.

You're making an awful lot of assumptions there sir. Mind you, the Bills need only sign one free agent and fill the rest of their needs through the draft. Pay Haynesworth a 6-year $80 million deal and watch the D become top three.

We will spend big money on 2nd teir FA's and Chris Brown will make us all think they are the next great thing. Another perfect sh*tstorm brought to you by Ralph.

We build thru the draft. not FA.

no we go into free agency to prudently cherry pick players of need that we have targeted. its no coincedence that we sign our major free agents every year in the first 24 hours after free agency starts.

i absolutly love the way the bills staff handles free agency. they target 1 or 2 players and @ the second the free agency period begins we either have our players or we dont.

if my prayers are answered 10 minutes after free agency starts this year we will have matt birk under contract and if we have to over pay for him so be it. IMO getting a great center is the answer for our offense this year. then what ever other players the bills have targeted will be whip cream on the pudding.

IMO if we get a great veteran center our line will instantly turn dominant and all the disrespect our guards get from the fans will go away and trent will no longer have the nose tackle in his backfield before he sets up because both preston and fowler are simply wimps. we need an expiranced anchor center and IMO birk is the perfect man for the job.
