Mark Vader Posted February 7, 2009 Posted February 7, 2009 As Hollywood prepares to hand it's Oscars to the performances of 2008, the year of 2009 concludes it's garbage season this month. Interestingly enough, this year's garbage season has been extremely profitable with January's surprise hits like "Paul Blart", "My Bloody Valentine", "The Unborn" & "Hotel For Dogs". February hopes to continue the trend all the way to March, before the box office explodes with the highly anticipated "Watchmen" being released. This month offers bigger titles and kicks off with two known franchises, one horror and one comedy. First the horror. When the 2009 calendar showed that Friday the 13th would be in February, Warner Bros. did not waste any time. What a big break to have the most popular slasher movie series occur the day before Valentine's Day. However, this time out "Friday the 13th" is starting from the beggining with this "re-imagining" of the first Friday the 13th, rather than another sequel. Dealing with the origin of Jason at Camp Crystal Lake. In this outing, a group of young adults discover a boarded up Camp Crystal Lake, where they soon encounter Jason Voorhees and his deadly intentions. Starring Jared Padalecki, Amanda Righetti & Derek Mears. Now the comedy. Steve Martin is back as Inspector Jacques Clouseau in "The Pink Panther 2". This time, Clouseau teams up with a squad of International detectives who are just as bumbling as he is. Their mission: Stop a globe-trotting thief who specializes in stealing historical artifacts. The cast of this movie is surprisingly deep with co-stars, Jean Reno, Emily Mortimer, Andy Garcia, John Cleese, Alfred Molina, Jeremy Irons & Lily Tomlin. Given the times we live in with the economy it seems only appropriate that a movie like "The International" is released. Interpol Agent Louis Salinger and Manhattan Assistant District Attorney Eleanor Whitman pool their resources in an attempt to break up an international arms dealing ring financed by a high-profile bank. Starring Clive Owen, Naomi Watts & Armin Mueller-Stahl. Back in 1995 the popular video game Street Fighter became a movie, which starred Jean-Claude Van Damme & Raul Julia. It failed miserably. So 14 years later, Hollywood gives it another try with "Street Fighter: The legend of Chun-Li". Interpol agent Chun-Li enters an underground fighting tournament, with her eyes set on M. Bison, the contest's founder and leader of a crime syndicate who may have been responsible for the death of Chun-Li's father. Street Fighter is still somewhat popular, but are fanboys that eager to see another film? Starring Kristin Kreuk, Neal McDonough, Michael Clarke Duncan & Moon Bloodgood. Not forgetting the multitudes of women wanting to see anything romantic this month, New Line Cinema releases "He's Just Not That Into You". A romantic comedy that has everything that a woman wants to see in a movie: Romance, Comedy, and a cast full of beautiful people. Which is what this movie definitely delivers on the 3rd count. Romantic woes affect an interconnected group of Baltimore singles and marrieds. Starring Ginnifer Goodwin, Jennifer Aniston, Ben Affleck, Jennifer Connelly, Scarlett Johansson, Drew Barrymore, Justin Long, Bradley Cooper, Kevin Connoly & Kris Kristofferson. Director/Actor Tyler Perry is back to his genderbending ways with "Madea Goes To Jail". When Madea's trouble-making antics land her behind bars, among the cast of characters she meets is Candy, a prostitute whose life is off-track and in need of the type of tough love that only Madea can provide. Co-starring Keshia Knight Pulliam & Derek Luke. Stop motion animation director Henry Selick brings us "Coraline". A secret door in her family's new house offers a passage way to an unusual parallel world for young Coraline. Starring Dakota Fanning, Teri Hatcher, John Hodgman & Keith David. What worked last year with the Hannah Montana/Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds Concert movie, could very well work again with this year's "Jonas Bros.: The 3D Concert Experience". A 3-D concert film of the 2008 Jonas Brothers "Burning Up" concert tour, as well as documentary footage on the lives of the three brothers. In the long delayed "Fanboys", Four guys and their galpal plan a cross-country trip in order to steal a print of Star Wars: Episode I -- The Phantom Menace from Skywalker Ranch so their dying friend can see it before its world premiere. Starring Dan Fogler, Jay Baruchel & Kristen Bell. In "Push", a trio of young people with special abilities are pursued by a clandestine U.S. government agency who wants the gifted ones back in their fold. Starring Camilla Belle, Dakota Fanning, Chris Evans & Djimon Hounsou. In "Confessions of a Shopaholic", Charming Manhattanite Rebecca Bloomwood is an out-of-control spender/fashionista, so it's a bit ironic when she lands a job as an advice columnist for a financial magazine, and she becomes an instant celebrity. Starring Isla Fisher, Hugh Dancy & Krysten Ritter. In "Fired Up", Two high school jocks decide to ditch their annual football training session for cheerleading camp, where they think their ruse will result in plenty of hook-ups. Starring Eric Christian Olsen, Nicholas D'Agosto & Sarah Roemer. Finally in the IMAX filmed "Under the Sea 3-D", Jim Carrey narrates this underwater look at the diverse coastal regions of Southern Australia, New Guinea, and the Indo-Pacific areas, and the impact of global warming on the oceans.
