finknottle Posted January 23, 2009 Posted January 23, 2009 Link This is an interesting story. It goes against everything America stands for. When you are an unpaid volunteer, you *should* expect checks from the government for the rest of your life. It's what volunteerism is all about.
Helmet_hair Posted January 23, 2009 Posted January 23, 2009 It would be one thing if these men took us to the edge of victory and then suddenly surrendered to the Japs but they did not, they saw the war to the bitter end and so should our government for these men.

IDBillzFan Posted January 23, 2009 Posted January 23, 2009 Y'know, I can see doing this to NY'ers because they're strong and gritty and resilient. But these Alaskans are barely human to begin with. Why, oh why pick on the weak and helpless.
KD in CA Posted January 23, 2009 Posted January 23, 2009 So the Pentagon is going to balance it's budget by cutting ~$12K per month in payments to this group of old men?
Tux of Borg Posted January 23, 2009 Posted January 23, 2009 Out of all the wasteful spending in the government, they decide to go after this. Half of these guys probably won't live through Obama's term in the white house.
Kelly the Dog Posted January 23, 2009 Posted January 23, 2009 This seems just stupid. Who decided to do this, it really doesn't say, does it?
finknottle Posted January 23, 2009 Posted January 23, 2009 So the Pentagon is going to balance it's budget by cutting ~$12K per month in payments to this group of old men? The Pentagon shouldn't have been giving them the money in the first place. There was no provision for this when they volunteered. What next? In 30 years are we going to see footage of teary-eyed contractors asking where their benefits are? And NGO volunteers in Iraq? Most of them have served the country bravely.

finknottle Posted January 23, 2009 Posted January 23, 2009 I wonder if this is the liberal congress's vindictiveness going after Palin? It's in the spirit of that, but you can't get the military to move that quickly. This had to be in the works for at least a year.

Your lack of reading comprehension is astounding. The men receiving the military pensions all qualified for those pensions with 20 years or more of military service independent of the volunteer time in question. Then at some point a decision was made to add the volunteer time to their service time when computing the value of their pensions. Now some idiot at the pentagon made a horrible decision and reversed the previous ruling, which did not eliminate the pensions but did reduce their value (i.e. someone who was receiving a $1000 a month sitpend is noe receiving a $750 per month stipend.). So the only way the contractors get in on this is to enlist and do 20 or more years of service.
/dev/null Posted January 23, 2009 Posted January 23, 2009 Harry needs the money for his Gangster Museum. One of the characters in Casino is based off Harry Reid http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Casino_(film)#Cast At least he got one of the Smothers Brothers to play him on film
