What FDR did, we are still better for it as a country in the long run. If the federal gov't was never strengthened and our society never (shudder for all you baby's out there) socialized under the New Deal... How do you think our society would have faired over the past 70+years. One thing is for sure, we be already talking about the "Panic of 2008."

Just face it... We are a better society being "socialized."

Either that or the Arab world was emboldened by the Act of terrorism, regardless of what their governments said publically. In addition since countries like France have a huge Arab population (25%) no amount of good will was going to over come their hatred for the western world.

Two things here:

If France weren't so damn socialist and politically correct they wouldn't have 25% Arab population.

And really who cares what France thinks of us or Sweden or any of those bozo countries?

I rather be more mindful of who fears us because we are winning the battle over terrorism.

The true 'few' democracies left in the world will support that effort. If other countries hate us, then let them...it means we are doing the right thing. Like Syria and Saudi Arabia are suddenly becoming pro-American because we closed Gitmo. Yah!

They just don't get it. They don't realize what made and still makes us great is we are an independent democracy. Free-market capitalism is the only economic system that is proven to work. Greed is what undone the ideology. They hate America, no doubt. They want to free the terrorist, let the drug peddlers storm the border, imprison their own military.

He's onto us!

Seriously, how can you say stuff like that and then act offended when people call you a moron?

Not the past 10 days... No boats to break up the ice... We are still running, just nothing can get through... It is clear down river up until the bend about 5 miles down form me... It is like a giant trap on a drain (not unlike how the ice boom acts in BFLO) where the ice field begins... We don't have the flow to send it down... The steel plant on the bend keeps the water down below it warm... So we resort to running our bubblers and machinery every hour and chipping ice by hand... Once a vessels begins to move again and clear a path... It will be like Roto-Rooter getting the ice flowing down stream... But we are still open and chipping ice. It will break pretty fast given our latitude once a thaw comes!

Back in the day with all steel plants ABOVE us towards the lake, this place would never freeze.

I keep getting a guy calling about wanting to get his sugar to market... I say call the towing companies... I think nobody wants to risk damage to their fleet given the soft and slow economy???

Actually we are (or are supposed to be) a republic.

Since there really is no example of "Free-market capitalism" out in the world... would you care to explain how this statement is true?

There have been examples of free market societies that have thrived throughout history, including the United States. Unfortunately those in charge (usually a mixture of the financial elite and the government) aren't able to stand by without trying to get more money or more power. The desire for a more centralized and powerful government, along with the need for unlimited amounts of spending power, will always win out in the end. You can follow that line through almost every major society throughout history.
