ChevyVanMiller Posted January 19, 2009 Posted January 19, 2009 Spent the past week catching up on shows clogging up the disc space of my TiVo. Wrote a column about what I have prioritized: Chevy's TiVo Thought it might make a good off-season discussion here. What programs do you TiVo so that you're sure not to miss them?
PastaJoe Posted January 19, 2009 Posted January 19, 2009 I pretty much DVR every show or movie I watch, so I can watch when I want, skip the commericals, or fast-forward past boring parts. The only things I watch live are the news and football. Currently: Family Guy Robot Chicken Sarah Connor Chronicles 24 Law & Order SVU Nip/Tuck Lost Law and Order Top Chef Ramsey's Kitchen Nightmares Smallville The Office 30 Rock ER Hardball McLaughlin Group Saturday Night Live Fox News Sunday Chris Matthews Show Meet the Press This Week Sabres games (have to add time in case of OT/SO) In season: Sons of Anarchy Rescue Me America's Next Top Model Project Runway Top Design Hell's Kitchen Venture Brothers

So I can get about 250 hours of HD recording through DirecTV Let's see if I can recall some of the stuff we record.... For new shows we usually record and then wait to see if the network cancels it - if so, we don't invest our time watching anymore. Here's a list of what I can recall: CSI :Miami (have all of last season recorded as well as this season... We're a bit behind ) CSI: NY CSI Smallville Daily Show Momma's Boys (lame...) How I Met Your Mother Gossip Girl Big Bang Theory Mentalist Simpsons Num3rs Ghost Whisperer (SDS' favorite show I bet) Eleventh Hour (haven't seen any yet) My Name is Earl Gary Unmarried Privilged 90210 (new one) The Unit Cold Case Superstars of Dance (?) PastaJoe Posted January 21, 2009 Posted January 21, 2009 Damn, these can't be all in HD otherwise you'd have to have a huge box Don't know the exact size, but I rarely run out of space unless I record a couple of movies in addition to my list. I let multiple weeks of shows record, like maybe 5 weeks of Top Chef, then watch them all consecutively at one time. You can cut maybe 15-20 minutes from each show by fast forwarding through the commercials and the reviews of the previous shows at the start.

Really? Can u just hook up an external hard drive?
Fezmid Posted January 21, 2009 Posted January 21, 2009 Really? Can u just hook up an external hard drive? Yes, you can connect an external drive via eSATA. However if you do that, then the internal harddrive is no longer used -- meaning any recordings you have will be unwatchable without powering off the unit and starting it without the attached external drive. If you're feeling adventurous, you can actually open up the case of the HR20/HR21 and pop in your own SATA drive, then power it back up. The box detects the new drive, installs the OS on it, and you're done. Takes 15 minutes tops and is very handy. Note that this violates your warranty and is not supported. That's what I did though

That's what I did though I did not know that! Sweet. So, the existing recordings remain on the original drive even if you use it again? It doesn't overwrite it when you unplug the external and fire it up?
