Cameron Wake a dolphin!

Well so much for signing this guy. He just signed with the dolphins per roto world..

Dolphins signed OLB/DE Cameron Wake to a four-year, $4.9 million contract. The deal includes $1 million guaranteed.

It's a low risk, high upside addition for Miami. Wake played college ball at Penn State, where he made just 8.5 career sacks. He didn't make it the Giants as an undrafted free agent in 2005, but blossomed in the CFL. Wake rang up 23 sacks for the BC Lions last season. The Dolphins will likely start Wake out at outside linebacker and have him push incumbent Matt Roth.

Arguments that Jauron is a highly regarded coach w/in NFL circles notwithstanding, do we really expect free agents to flock to BuffTown to play for a perennial loser like Dick?

More Details from Pro Football Talk:

"The Miami Dolphins have won the eight-team contest for the services of a little-known CFL pass-rusher, who could have a big impact at the next level.

According to Adam Schefter of NFL Network, the Fins have signed defensive end Cameron Wake, formerly of the B.C. Lions.

Wake had 39 sacks in two seasons with the non-Detroit Lions.

He played college football at Penn State as “Derek Wake.” Once he arrived in Canada, he opted to use his middle name, Cameron. (Maybe it’s because “Derek” is Canadian slang for ”douchebag.”)

Undrafted after running the 40 in 4.55 seconds, Wake signed with the Giants in 20065. He was listed in the 2005 NFL Record & Fact Book as a linebacker.

Wake visited eight NFL teams, and his decision came down to the Colts and the Dolphins.

Per Schefter, Wake signed a four-year deal, which could be worth up to $4.9 million. He also will receive nearly $1 million in guaranteed money.

For a guy who wasn’t drafted, it’s a good deal. But if he plays in the NFL like he played in Canada, it won’t be long before that contract makes him starts acting like a real Derek."

So the salient points, 8 teams bidding on him, with the Colts and Dolphins the finalists. What we don't know is how the bidding stacked up and if the Bills were disqualified for monetary reasons or because of other reasons the player may have had.

I will say this though. The guy might be a boom or a bust. But considering the Bills' needs, and viewing his acquisition from a risk/rewards model, I would hope that the Bills were the highest bidders. So little to pay, so much, potentially to gain. Wish we new what the offers were.

No. We expect the Bills to tread water or regress in 2009 and Dick will be fired in 11 months or so.

2003 posted this on the other "Wake" post:

Wake narrowed his choices to four teams, including the Buffalo Bills, before choosing the Dolphins.

"Buffalo really put a great package together," Sheehy said. "They did a wonderful job recruiting him."

And it addresses, without really answering the questions I posted earlier. My guess is that our offer was right up there but we were passed over for non-monetary reasons. Sounds like the defensive scheme the Dolphins run (3-4) had some to do with it.

Oh well, nice try I guess.

Looks like Cohwer, Shanahan, Gruden, Holmgren and Billick might all be available next year. Each has at least one ring. I'd have those 5 on my list and would add a couple of younger guys as well.

This is something I recycled from an earlier post but in my opinion we will never have a marquee football coach or G.M. here in Buffalo. The biggest problem is (as usual) money. The reason Gregg Williams and Mike Mularkey were hired is because they came cheap. Ralph actually wanted to retain Mularkey (who resigned) probably so he wouldn't have to eat too much of Mularkey's contract.

FYI: Jauron is the 30th highest paid coach in the NFL.

In 2008 only Brad Childress and Lane Kiffin made less money than Jauron's $1.5 million per season. The mean average for an NFL Head Coach is over $3 million per year. IN 2008 Holmgren made $8 million, Shanahan $6 million, Dungy $5 million, and Jon Gruden $4 million.

Jauron's extension is rumored to be 3 years at $2 million/year. In order to hire any of these marquee coaches next year the Bills would have to eat the remaining two years on Jauron's contract ($4 million) and pay a coach around $4 million per year. That would be a one year hit of at least $8 million. I just cannot see Ralph, knowing him as we do, eating $8 million. Besides, since the failed Donahoe experiment, Ralph has expressed that he's against giving anyone too much power and I think the top coaches that we're discussing would want more power than Ralph would give them.

On top of that the best coaches can write their own tickets. I don't think any of these coaches would want to come to Buffalo to work for Ralph when they could go to a team with a better owner, stadium, payroll, weather, etc. In other words, a better chance to succeed and solidify their legacy.

The only way we could get a top coach, in my opinion would be to throw stupid money at him/them, that is, to outbid bigger budget teams with more attractive jobs.

Getting back to our attempts to sign Cameron Wake, we might have made the best financial offer but it boils down to do you choose Huizenga/Parcells/Miami/ 3-4 defense or do you choose Wilson/Brandon/Buffalo/4-3 defense?

We can wish all we want but I'd rather discuss realistic thoughts. The Bills are not going to get a marquee head coach.
