millbank Posted January 15, 2009 Posted January 15, 2009 THINK OUTSIDE THE BOX.... You are driving along in your car on a wild, stormy night. You pass by a bus stop, and you see three people waiting for the bus: 1. An old lady who looks as if she is about to die. 2. An old friend who once saved your life. 3. The perfect man (or) woman you have been dreaming about. Which one would you choose to offer a ride to, knowing that there could only be one passenger in your car. Think before you continue reading. This is a moral/ethical dilemma that was once actually used by Microsoft as part of a job application. You could pick up the old lady, because she is going to die, and thus you should save her first; or you could take the old friend because he once saved your life, and this would be the perfect chance to pay him back. However, you may never be able to find your perfect dream lover again. The candidate who was hired (out of 200 applicants) had no trouble coming up with his answer.
Corp000085 Posted January 15, 2009 Posted January 15, 2009 I'd ask the old lady her name. If she said "Bea Arthur", she could ride with me all night long.
Fezmid Posted January 15, 2009 Posted January 15, 2009 I'd get out of the car, tell my friend to drive the dying woman to the hospital and spend time with the woman of my dreams.
KD in CA Posted January 15, 2009 Posted January 15, 2009 I'd get out of the car, tell my friend to drive the dying woman to the hospital and spend time with the woman of my dreams.
millbank Posted January 15, 2009 Author Posted January 15, 2009 A little tale for you C.... The Fence There was a little boy with a bad temper. His father gave him a bag of nails and told him that every time he lost his temper, to hammer a nail in the back fence. The first day the boy had driven 37 nails into the fence. Then it gradually dwindled down. He discovered it was easier to hold his temper than to drive those nails into the fence. Finally the day came when the boy didn't lose his temper at all. He told his father about it and the father suggested that the boy now pull out one nail for each day that he was able to hold his temper. The days passed and the young boy was finally able to tell his father that all the nails were gone. The father took his son by the hand and led him to the fence. He said, "You have done well, my son, but look at the holes in the fence. The fence will never be the same. When you say things in anger, they leave a scar just like this one. You can put a knife in a man and draw it out. It won't matter how many times you say I'm sorry, the wound is still there. A verbal wound is as bad as a physical one." Friends are a very rare jewel, indeed. They make you smile and encourage you to succeed. They lend an ear, they share a word of praise, and they always want to open their hearts to us. Never take a true friend for granted and never forget to show your friends how much you care. I'd get out of the car, tell my friend to drive the dying woman to the hospital and spend time with the woman of my dreams.

Acantha Posted January 15, 2009 Posted January 15, 2009 One day, after holding in his anger for so long, that little kid is going to destroy that fence.

None.....let them all get on the bus in a few minutes when it comes.

This one is just off the top of my head and I didn't read on to the replies after your original post Mill... Here is what I would do: I would stop my car and get out... Have the old friend (who saved my life) drive the old lady who is about to die. I would then take the bus with my dream person!

Never take a true friend for granted and never forget to show your friends how much you care. Nice story. Giving your old friend a car (even know they have to drive the old lady for a short spell) is a nice gift and gesture of thanks. Or: You can get on the bus with the old friend and have your dream person drive the old lady... Then when you go to claim the car back (registered in your name)... You find out who the dream person is.
Cugalabanza Posted January 15, 2009 Posted January 15, 2009 I know if it was my company asking, the correct answer would be "run over the old lady with your car to get rid of her. Then, when the bus comes, push your old friend under it so you are no longer in debt to him. Then jump on the bus with the person of your dreams and hijack it to South America where operation costs are much cheaper."
Philly McButterpants Posted January 15, 2009 Posted January 15, 2009 One day, after holding in his anger for so long, that little kid is going to destroy that fence. Serenity now!!!
Ramius Posted January 15, 2009 Posted January 15, 2009 Leave all of them at the bus stop. The girl of my dreams can afford a very nice car and wouldn't be taking the bus. As for the kid who held his anger in, the next week he went and mowed down 20 kids at his school after they picked on him.

millbank Posted January 15, 2009 Author Posted January 15, 2009 another short little story...... The Obstacle in Our Path In ancient times, a king had a boulder placed on a roadway. Then he hid himself and watched to see if anyone would remove the huge rock. Some of the king's wealthiest merchants and courtiers came by and simply walked around it. Many loudly blamed the king for not keeping the roads clear, but none did anything about getting the big stone out of the way. Then a peasant came along carrying a load of vegetables. On approaching the boulder, the peasant laid down his burden and tried to move the stone to the side of the road. After much pushing and straining, he finally succeeded. As the peasant picked up his load of vegetables, he noticed a purse lying in the road where the boulder had been. The purse contained many gold coins and a note from the king indicating that the gold was for the person who removed the boulder from the roadway. The peasant learned what many others never understand. Every obstacle presents an opportunity to improve one's condition.
Chef Jim Posted January 15, 2009 Posted January 15, 2009 I think the correct answer (not mine of course) is to tell them all to !@#$ off! We are talking about Microsoft right??
stuckincincy Posted January 15, 2009 Posted January 15, 2009 1. An old lady who looks as if she is about to die.2. An old friend who once saved your life. 3. The perfect man (or) woman you have been dreaming about. Which one would you choose to offer a ride to, knowing that there could only be one passenger in your car. 1.
stuckincincy Posted January 15, 2009 Posted January 15, 2009 A tale I cut my son a new plank and give it to him. With stern face for a long time, followed by a warm smile, and a soft hand.
