BuffaloBud Posted January 12, 2009 Posted January 12, 2009 Know that this should really be on the consumer section, please allow a bit of leeway here before shifting there. Looking for an external hard drive to back up some internal SharePoint sites here at work. Current file size is approx. 25G. Looking at 1T USB format. Any pros, cons, suggestions, concerns, issues? Thanks.
Corp000085 Posted January 12, 2009 Posted January 12, 2009 If you want 1 TB of storage, buy an inexpensive NAS box that supports raid 1, then buy two internal 3.5" 1 tb drives and then you'll have the space you need with the redundancy of raid 1. Plus, internal drives + the nas box still is cheaper than one of those fancy usb drives. I have the d-link dns323 nas box along with a gigabit switch and 2 512gb hard drives. Faster than usb if you can believe it...
BuffaloBud Posted January 12, 2009 Author Posted January 12, 2009 Corp - thanks for the info. Let me look into this. I am no hardware junkie by any stretch of the imagination. Computer being connected to has USB, 1394 (Firewire), and spare PC card port. Essentially, Dell D630 laptop.
Corp000085 Posted January 12, 2009 Posted January 12, 2009 Corp - thanks for the info. Let me look into this. I am no hardware junkie by any stretch of the imagination. Computer being connected to has USB, 1394 (Firewire), and spare PC card port. Essentially, Dell D630 laptop. Depending on what you get, the price may be a little more for a whole network setup, but the benefits are worth it. You will get the power and flexibility of a linux nas box on your network and the reliability of a raid 1 setup. I love it and i'd never go back to a usb external drive, unless I needed it for a specific purpose like a hard drive image to be placed in a safety deposit box or something. My main issue with most usb boxes is that they're passively cooled (no fan), so they get really hot which decreases their lifespan. I went all out with my setup last summer when I woke my computer up from sleeep and the usb drive wouldn't wake. I lost mp3s, wedding pictures, saved program source disks... you name it, i lost it. Overall, i spent about $300.
