Browns fan arrested for driving couch.

To be seen in tomorrow morning's Cleveland Plain Dealer:

Two quarterbacks are broken. The star wide receiver has silicone hands. Losses are piling up, and fans are begging for the Steelers' old coach to take over the team.

What else can happen in this bizarre Browns season? Would you believe a loyal fan being slapped with two tickets for driving his motorized couch -- yes, couch -- outside the Muni Lot?

Mike Meredith pleaded not guilty to citations for driving an unregistered vehicle and having expired plates and has a date in Cleveland Municipal Court tomorrow to plead his case.

He usually drives the "Go-Kouch" around the Municipal Parking Lot, hitting different tailgate parties. Meredith and a couple of buddies converted a riding mower into a mobile couch in 2005 because "I was wasting time walking around when I could be sitting here eating hot dogs and drinking beer."

On Nov. 23, he joked around to the officers at the entrance to the Muny Lot that he was driving his buddy to the stadium (he didn't have tickets himself.)

"They laughed and waved me through," he said. "We were like, 'Really? You're going to let us go?' " So he kept driving, past several other cops who laughed, until he was stopped on East Ninth Street by an officer who didn't find it funny.

He got slapped with two tickets and, of course, a Browns loss. The following week, he rode around the Muny Lot with a coffee can and a poster board displaying the citations. Tailgaters gave him nearly $500 to cover the fines.

But Meredith says the money will go to the Make-a-Wish Foundation instead. "I started thinking about it. We go down there to have some fun. Why not just turn this into a positive?"

He has prepared a defense, walking the couch route and snapping pictures of every officer who waved him through. But if he loses his case, the money still goes to charity:

"I can opt for community service in lieu of payment," he said.

Watching the Browns play touchdown-free football for the rest of the season should qualify.

One of the stranger stories I've read in a while.

If it's illegal to drive a couch on the street, why do I see so many of these things on the road then?

Because that's a modified golf cart.

Apparently, those are legal. I will remember that the next time I'm on a golf course, when I borrow a cart and try to drive one down the road.

That's a Smart Car. There are one of two of them in the area, here. I've actually considered getting one.

Believe it or not, they perform fairly well in crash tests.

They're a rollcage on wheels so if you get hit by a truck you'll go hopping like a soccer ball across the road.
