LabattBlue
I'm just wondering if they have had more "rookie" coordinators than "vets" who can outscheme the best of them?
GG
Do you mean NFL OC & DC vets, or coordinator experience at a high level. Frankly, the answer won't tell you anything, as most of the NFL vet coordinators who were in Buffalo have gone on to be successful elsewhere, while flopping here. Other than Wade & LeBeau, neither of whom flopped here.

Our D was AWESOME that year under Grey/Lebeau, which was really LeBeau.

I believe that LeBeau had standing offers to be DC in Buffalo & Pitt, and chose Pitt. There was no question of Jerry's role if LeBeau chose the Bills. Now that I think about he should have been the HC he was smart and knew football.

Heck, Dan Henning has had tons of success since leaving Buffalo - most recently now with Miami. JDG

silvermike
This is roughly our history with Offensive and Defensive coordinators: Offensive coordinators: Dan Henning: 1997 (previous experience: Super Bowl winning OC with the Washington Redskins.) The source here is only Wikipedia, but it says that his refusal to fire Henning had something to do with why Marv retired. Joe Pendry: 1998-2000 (previously OC: Carolina, Kansas City) Mike Sheppard: 2001 (previously OC: San Diego. Currently, by the way, the WRs coach in Cincy. Good job getting the most from CHad Johnson) Kevin Gilbride: 2002-03. Tons of previous and future experience, of course. Tom Clements: 2004-05: First time OC, now OC in Green Bay. Steve Fairchild: 2006-07 (previously OC with the Rams) Turk Schonert: 2008. First time OC. Defensive coordinator: Wade Phillips until he took over as HC. Ted Cottrell: 1998-2000: First time DC Jerry Gray: 2001-2005: First time DC Perry Fewell: 2006-2008. First time DC Here are our rankings, for what that's worth. It's points, yards, with offense in bold and defense in italics 1997: 29, 25, 23, 9 (Henning and Wade) 1998: 7, 6, 15, 6 (Pendry-Cottrell) 1999: 16, 11, 2, 1 (Pendry-Cottrell) 2000: 20, 9, 18, 3. Note: this is a remarkably huge difference between points and yards. This is the year we had historically bad special teams. I think that accounts for the difference. (Pendry-Cottrell) 2001: 27, 13, 29, 21 (Sheppard-Gray) 2002: 11, 11, 27, 15 (Gilbride-Gray) 2003: 30, 30, 5, 2 (Gilbride-Gray/LeBeau) 2004: 7, 25, 8, 2 (Clements-Gray). The opposite of 2000 on offense, great points, crappy yardage. See April, Bobby. 2005: 24, 28, 24, 29 (Clements-Gray) 2006: 23, 30, 10, 18 (Fairchild-Fewell) 2007: 30, 30, 18, 31 (Fairchild-Fewell) 2008: 22, 21, 12, 12 (Schonert-Fewell)
