The final month of the year brings variety to the big screen multiplexes, as the Holiday Season comes to an end. Most of the mainstream films bring in box office bucks, while the independant films look to garner Oscar nominations and year-end awards. Big budgets and big names usually dominate at this time of year.

One of those big budgets is brought to us by 20th Century Fox, with the remake of their 1951 sci-fi classic "The Day the Earth Stood Still". Aliens land on Earth with an important message for its citizens. Keanu Reeves, Kathy Bates & Jennifer Connely star. Fans of the original have had a difficult time accepting Reeves getting the role of Klaatu, but the trailer does look exciting and it's been awhile since a big sci-fi film has been released.

Jim Carrey returns to big comedy with "Yes Man". Carrey plays Carl Allen, a man who challenges himself to say "yes" to everything for an entire year. It's been 5 years since Carrey starred in a comedy like this, and fans who love to see him in films like this will probably turn out in big numbers for this. Zooey Deschanel co-stars.

Brad Pitt stars in "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button", directed by David Fincher. Benjamin Button was born under unusual circumstances. As everyone around him grew older, he aged backwards, making the challenges of life such as creating friendships, finding a job and falling in love all the more difficult and heartbreaking. Pitt & Fincher have had success before in previous films "Se7en" & "Fight Club". While this film is definitely much different than those 2 movies, the star power and different storyline will draw plenty of attention. Cate Blanchett, Tilda Swinton & Julia Ormond co-star.

Tom Cruise stars in the oft-delayed "Valkyrie", directed by Bryan Singer. Near the end of WWII, Claus von Stauffenberg leads to group of fellow German army colonels in an attempt to assassinate Adolf Hitler; the event would later be called the July 20 Plot of 1944. There are a lot of question marks surrounding this film. Why the constant release date changes? What of the rumors of MGM/UA wanting this movie removed from Oscar consideration, despite early positive reviews? Can MGM/UA and Paula Wagner reconcile any differences that have arisen with Cruise? Whatever the drama is, this movie appears to have plenty of upside. Bill Nighy, Tom Wilkinson, Kenneth Branagh, Terence Stamp & Carice Van Houten co-star.

Will Smith stars in "Seven Pounds". A professional man who is close to suicide for his role in an auto accident that claimed the lives of seven people finds a reason to live, and to atone, when he falls for a woman who wants to help him deal with his grief. Smith's success in "The Pursuit of Happyness", showed that his fans want to see him in more dramatic roles too. Rosario Dawson & Woody Harrelson co-star.

Adam Sandler stars in "Bedtime Stories". Somehow, someway, the lavish bedtime stories that a hotel handyman tells his niece and nephew start to magically come true. Courteney Cox, Keri Russell, Guy Pearce & Teresa Palmer co-star.

Owen Wilson & Jennifer Aniston star in "Marley & Me". Based on the popular novel, An impossibly cute, but impossible-to-live-with yellow Labrador retriever named Marley teaches his newlywed owners a thing or two about patience and parenthood. Alan Arkin co-stars.

After the succes of "Sin City" & "300", director Frank Miller now brings us "The Spirit". A rookie cop returns from the dead to fight crime from the shadows of Central City. His main opposition is a former lab technician who has reinvented himself as The Octopus, an elusive criminal mastermind who knows the secrets behind his nemesis. Miller's vision has attracted many fans, but will there be success in this obscure hero story, especially with the Christmas Day release? Starring Gabriel Macht, Samuel L. Jackson, Scarlett Johansson, Eva Mendes, & Jaime King star.

In "Punisher: War Zone": Continuing his crusade to punish violent criminals, former FBI agent Frank Castle arrives in New York to take on the city's underworld bosses. Starring Ray Stevenson, Dominic West & Julie Benz.

In "The Tale of Despereaux", The tale of three unlikely heroes - a misfit mouse who prefers reading books to eating them, an unhappy rat who schemes to leave the darkness of the dungeon, and a bumbling servant girl with cauliflower ears - whose fates are intertwined with that of the castle's princess. Starring Matthew Broderick, Dustin Hoffman, Emma Watson, Kevin Kline, William H. Macy, Christopher Lloyd, Frank Langella, Stanley Tucci, Robbie Coltrane, Sigourney Wever & Tracy Ullman.

In "Nothing Like the Holidays", A Puerto Rican family living in the area of Humboldt Park in west Chicago face what may be their last Christmas together. Starring John Leguizamo, Freddy Rodriguez, Debra Messing, Alfred Molina, Luis Guzman & Jay Hernandez.

In "Delgo", an adventurous but naive teenager, must rally his group of friends to protect their world from conflict between the Lockni and Nohrin people. Starring Freddie Prinze, Jr., Val Kilmer, Anne Bancroft, Burt Reynolds, Malcolm McDowell, Jennifer Love Hewitt, Louis Gosset, Jr., Michael Clarke Duncan, Chris Kattan, Eric Idle & Kelly Ripa.

So how does this work, is he born as an adult old man? How does he fit in the womb? Or is he born old but baby sized?

"The Day the Earth Stood Still"

I am a BIG fan of the black and white Cold War classic version. I like Keanu Reeves and have no problem with him playing Klaatu. My biggest concern is that they will butcher the plot from the original. I am crossing my fingers it is not another "I, Robot", because I love science fiction. If you are going to write a different story, do not take the name of something else.

"Yes Man"

Sounds like a formula Carrey movie .

"The Curious Case of Benjamin Button"

Makes me want to find the F. Scott Fitzgerald story. It is bizarre in a Ray Bradury fashion.

"Valkyrie"

I guess the Germans were not enamored of Scientology either. I guess Cruise has toned down the volume on his pulpit and may be tolerable. It sounds like a definite "wait for the DVD" movie tough. Interestingly when Cruise read the script he did not realize this was HISTORY. WTF do they teach in school these days!?

"Seven Pounds".

This is reported to be one of the darkest movies Will Smith has made, but that is because he is usually the loud prankster with a gun in one hand, a girl in the other, and a cigar in his mouth. Hard to dislike Will Smith.

"Bedtime Stories"

Sounds like a formula Carrey, oops I mean Sandler movie. Is his talent that narrow or his he really that limited in characters he can play?

"Marley & Me"

Yawn, unless Jennifer Aniston gets nude, heh.

"The Spirit"

I hope Miller can convey the satiric character Will Eisner created. Some of the best "comic strip" stuff ever made! If they let Frank Miller drive the bus this will be a cult hit, if nothing else..

"Punisher: War Zone"

Yawn. Video game, not a movie

"The Tale of Despereaux"

You never know - it is all in the way the characters are animated (visually and vocally) but the cast looks outstanding

Thanks for the summary!!

Where is Frost Nixon??

I'll have that up soon. Technically it may not fall under the Independent Film category, since it is distributed by Universal Pictures, but I am putting it there because of it's limited release date schedule.

Claus von Stauffenberg was a tall, physically imposing man who was known in the intellectual elite circles in Germany as a complex man. So they cast...the exact antithesis of that description? :P

The previews for "Valkyrie" make me want to vomit. It looks like a travesty to me.

Here are this month's Independent Films. Look for Oscar nominations and various critics awards and other year-end awards to be mentioned with some of these titles.

Director Ron Howard brings us "Frost/Nixon". BBC host David Frost interviews Richard Nixon in 1977, where the scandal-plagued President opens up about his role in the Watergate scandal. Howard has found success with films based on actual events, and this could be his strongest film yet. Starring Frank Langella, Michael Sheen, Kevin Bacon, Oliver Platt & Sam Rockwell.

Clint Eastwood stars in & directs "Gran Torino". When his prized 1972 Gran Torino nearly is stolen, disgruntled Korean War vet Walt Kowalski looks to clean up his neighborhood, which has been taken over by gangs. Eastwood somehow continues to make good movies and usually gets lots of awards for it. However, just as in 2006 with "Flags of Our Fathers" & "Letters From Iwo Jima", he has two films("Changeling" being the other)out late in the year with strong Oscar buzz that could cancel one or the other out. Bee vang & Christopher Carley co-star.

In "Doubt", The principal of a Catholic school in the Bronx grows suspicious of a priest who might have crossed the line with one of their students; her subsequent accusation leads to a tense confrontation that also involves a young nun who might have proof of the priest's wrongdoing. Starring Meryl Streep, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Amy Adams & Viola Davis.

"The Reader", Takes place in Post-WWII Germany. Nearly a decade after his affair with an older woman came to a mysterious end, law student Michael Burk re-encounters his former lover as she defends herself in a war-crime trial. Starring Kate Winslet, Ralph Fiennes & Bruno Ganz.

In "Defiance", Three Jewish brothers escape from Nazi-occupied Poland into the Belarussian forest, where they join Russian resistance fighters and endeavor to build a village in order to protect themselves and others in danger. Starring Daniel Craig, Liev Schreiber, Jamie Bell, George MacKay & Alexa Davalos. Directed by Edward Zwick, this delayed film gets released just in time for Oscar consideration.

After 11 years, director Sam Mendes re-unites Kate Winslet & Leonardo Dicaprio in "Revolutionary Road". The story of a young couple living in a Connecticut suburb during the mid-1950s struggle to come to terms with their personal problems while trying to raise their two children. Based on a novel by Richard Yates. Kathy Bates co-stars.

In "The Wrestler", With his battle scars and failing heart, retired professional wrestler Randy "The Ram" Robinson jumps back into the squared cirle, climbing his way up the independent-circuit ladder, with his eyes on a showdown with his longtime rival. Starring Mickey Rourke, Marisa Tomei & Evan Rachel Wood.

In "The Brothers Bloom", A pair of brothers and veteran conmen target an enigmatic wealthy woman as their potential last job, fully unaware of the twists in the road ahead of them. Starring Adrien Brody, Mark Ruffalo, Rachel Weisz, Rinko Kikuchi & Robbie Coltrane.

In "Nobel Son", A young chemistry student throws a wrench into the existence of Nobel Prize-winning scientist Eli Michaelson by first kidnapping his son, then exposing Michaelson to his family friends, and colleagues as the pompous, unscrupulous egomaniac he has become since his triumph. Starring Alan Rickman, Bryan Greenberg, Shawn Hatosy, Mary Steenburgen, Bill Pullman, Eliza Dushku, Danny DeVito & Ted Danson.

"Cadillac Records" is a chronicle of the rise and fall of Chess Records, the Chicago-based record label founded by Leonard Chess, whose musical ear and business savvy helped foster the careers of Etta James, Chuck Berry, and other rhythm-and-blues pioneers. Starring Adrien Brody, Beyonce Knowles, Mos Def & Cedric the Entertainer.

In "Last Chance Harvey", While in London for his daughter's wedding, a rumpled man finds his romantic spirits lifted by a new woman in his life. Starring Dustin Hoffman, Emma Thompson, Kathy Baker & James Brolin.

In "What Does'nt Kill You", Two lifelong friends who have survived the mean streets of South Boston find it increasingly hard to maintain a balance between their personal lives and the "jobs" they take for a local crime boss . Starring Ethan Hawke, Mark Ruffalo, Brian Goodman, Amanda Peet & Donnie Wahlberg.

In "Wendy & Lucy", A woman's life is derailed en route to a potentially lucrative summer job. When her car breaks down, and her dog is taken to the pound, the thin fabric of her financial situation comes apart. Starring Michelle Williams.

In "Nothing but the Truth", In Washington, D.C., a female reporter faces a possible jail sentence for outing a CIA agent and refusing to reveal her source. Starring Kate Beckinsale, Vera Farmiga, Alan Alda, Angela Bassett, David Schwimmer & Matt Dillon.

In "The Black Balloon", All Thomas wants is a normal adolescence but his autistic brother, Charlie, thwarts his every opportunity. Will Thomas, with the help of his girlfriend, Jackie, accept his brother? Starring Rhys Wakefield, Luke Ford, Toni Collette & Gemma Ward.

In "Waltz With Bashir", By meeting and interviewing old friends from around the world, Ari, a former member of the Israeli Army, retraces his spotty personal history to a life-changing incident that occurred during his country's 1982 invasion of Lebanon. I do'nt know the answer to Reeves, but I think Carrey is a good actor and his comedies do make money.

Reeves as Klaatu might actually work. His complete inability to emote or personally interact with other actors on-screen might actually make him a convincing alien.

If thats the case would'nt he have been better cast as Gort?

There is your answer.

Personally I think Carey is a talented actor. Yes, he often plays moronic, potty humor type roles, which he does well. But I think he's also done some great non-comedy stuff, even if all of the movies weren't all great.

Reeves on the other hand...

I don't think I have ever seen Jim Carey in a performance where he didn't overact. He is a ham in drama and comedy, IMO.

I have zero desire to ever see another Tom Cruise movie. He's overrated and nucking futs to boot.

Benjamen Button is one I want to see. Promos have intrigued me.

No desire to see Carey's movie. Just my opinion, but this looks like crap.

I saw some of Mission Impossible 3 on TV, this weekend. MI (the first movie) was so bad, I never bothered with 2 or 3. Anyway, my standards are a lot lower when I'm sitting in the house, watching a movie on TV, killing time. Still, that movie SUCKED, and sucked hard.

I thought he acted his parts perfectly in Eternal Sunshine... and The number 23 (or whatever that was called). The "overactor" label is something that I always thought was a lot of crap. His parts called for that kind of thing...it's why he was cast. He wasn't overacting, he was hamming it up as the character called for.
