Sloppy Seconds

Exactly. This type of stupid bullsh!# is why the NHL has been relegated to the network formerly known as OLN and can't beat women's college basketball in the ratings. :worthy:

Yep, because every player in the NFL, NBA, MLB, and Nascar are defying their coaches orders to not talk to the press, then calling an impromptu press conferences by their stalls to refer to women in a derogatory manner.

I must have missed the interview where Trent called his ex a "skivvy slut"....

I'd trade Fins for Avery straight up. Regardless of his shenanigans, he's still awesome at what he does on the ice and I think the fans would love it.

Sabres need something, anything to get them out of this lackluster play.

EDIT:

By suspending Avery, the NHL turned an irrelevant game in December between Dallas and Calgary that people probably would have watched (to see what Dion would have done) back to where it was originally, irrelevant.

Yah he totally turned around the Stars right? They were thinking about putting him on waivers even before his latest stunt. The guy's a cancer.

If by Fins you mean Max, then I think you're dreaming. Not only would the Sabres not take Avery on, no one is going to trade anything of value for Afinogenov.

Oh the horror!!!! Refering to an ex-girlfriend in a derogatory manner!!!! How will the NHL ever recover from this incident?!?!?

It's a HOCKEY league you friggin pansies, not a sewing circle!

Yup.

I used to LOVE hockey. It was one of the few places in life where there was honor. You play hard or you go home. You stand up for those around you. You screw up and you are expected to take your Robitussin.

Yup x 2.

Usually, when a fight starts during a game I'm watching, I change the channel for five minutes to see what else is on. I treat it like a commercial. I get no entertainment value by watching two morons hit each other.

And how many f#cking times has this happened in the "tough" NFL? When has an NFL player EVER talked trash about his ex on camera or another player's girlfriend ON CAMERA? They have a code of conduct for a reason. Like it or not, kids watch sports and they shouldn't have to be subjected to every moronic thing that comes out of a "look-at-me" idiot athlete.

Do you think more or less kids would have been exposed to this comment if it had just been stated and dropped instead of making a three-ring media circus out of it?

Sure, if it was just an off-hand comment to a reporter then they would have let it go.

In this case, he called over every reporter in the room and made a press conference of it. Of course the media is going to run with it because they all have the footage and it was brazen.

First, who said the NFL was tough? That league has been pussified too, as anyone who watches the game knows ("15 yards for putting his full weight on the QB"). But to your point, how many games was Owens suspended for calling Garcia gay? Zero.

Second, did you really just go to the "it's for the children" excuse?

And finally, this "story" only exists because the NHL hysterically overreacted. Otherwise it would have been forgotten in a day. Unless you believe the NHL milked this for the PR in which case you can hardly blame the player.

OK, class, so what have we learned here?

1) Elisha Cuthbert likes to sleep with hockey players. This is not necessarily a bad thing. Supposedly hockey players are the most gentlemanly of athletes toward women. Sure, Elisha sounds like she is a woman of loose morals. But then again, who among us does not enjoy the company of these type of women?

2) Sean Avery is a douchebag. Again, though, we all knew that already. There is a code among hockey players, and Avery obliterated it due to his comments. I actually laughed when I heard the term "sloppy seconds" on the ESPN broadcast. To be honest it's a term I've never heard outside this board.

3) The NHL should have just let Avery and whomever Elisha's dating now go at it on the ice for, say, five or ten minutes. It would have given the NHL more attention than they've had since the Rangers won the Cup, and the battle royale would certainly be an immortal YouTube clip.

Even the NHLPA realizes Avery is a nutjob and this is a losing battle. Avery's got a decent rap sheet with the league.

True and every indication is that they used Avery's rap sheet or "pattern" against him, but if I was Avery I'd be pissed the NHLPA didn't back me.

The NHLPA has no teeth right now, not after they got B word-slapped in the last labor stoppage then had the players revolt against he leadership.

Yah you are right, it's a hockey league not a !@#$ing nightclub. Once again, it's not what he said, but how he went about it. He was in the locker representing his team and the NHL. If he was at a bar and said this to a bunch of his buddies then it would be no problem. Maybe if the NFL hadn't turned a blind eye to it's players actions off the field and handed out hefty penalties years ago, they wouldn't be dealing with suspensions on a daily basis. This is Bettman (who I think is a weasle) saying if you want to play in the NHL, act like a professional. I don't see the problem here or how this pussifies the NHL?
