I am not advocating Joe D as head coach or anything...but just listen to his latest radio vault segment on GR55. The guy, 25 years after his last downs of football were played, has exactly the attitude that I think a Bills coach needs to have right now...he may be one of thos old timers who always complains about the modern athletes who don't produce a third of what he did, but make 100's times more...but he had a very good point...he said, and I am paraphrasing:

"These guys today, are great athletes, but they don't care that much about winning. I saw a few of them out at the casino, the day after the Browns loss, one of the worst teams in the leaue, laughing it up, and having a good time...it made me sick. When I played here, I was embarassed to be seen in public after we lost...and I was on some bad teams. These guys don't care as much about winning as the fans do, and that is what is wrong with this game now...these guys make too much damn money to sell themselves out on the field. Hockey and football are unlike other sports, they are tough, and you have to be tough to play them. A kid playing this game today might take a punch or two in the mouth, before they figure, I have 2 or 3 million in the bank..I don't need to take this...it makes them back off, play soft. They aren't playing to get paid, they get paid, then you hope they play...its' not all the guys, but it is just a problem, in general with the whole leauge right now. Despite all the hype, and all the great athletes in this leauge right now, we aren't seeing the best football now..."

Listening to Joe D, as much a blowhard as he can be, you really can hear the passion for victory in his voice...you just get the feeling, this guy would not settle for what we have been seeing... Have one on me Joe D!

I think Joe D's last coaching job was as a tight ends coach at Duke, where he experienced ALOT of losing

I agree with what he said. Great quote.

The guy is still in great shape, would probably handle any lineman on the team too.

I shook hands with Joe back when he was coaching at Duke in the 1999 season. He is not as tall as claimed. He looked about 6'1". At the time he looked about 230 lbs and trim. I think he spends alot more time on the treadmill than he does the weights. He would get destroyed

I like Joe's fire when he talks on the radio. I wish he had a mroe regular during the season.

I want to know who was at the Casino--The fans take losses harder than some of the players.

As far as him coaching--I think it would be fun to have a guy like this on our staff.

We have to adsmit though the line has played better the past couple of games. But that might be due to the opponents.

I call bull. I remember distinctly one Sunday night in 1982 going to No Names after an ugly loss to Miami and seeing Sherman White among others hanging out and laughing it up. Joe D wasn't there, but many Bills were. Never mind that those chuck Knox teams were better than Joe D's teams in the late '70s. Memory certainly has a way of playing tricks on you after a while.

My cousin married Sherman W's brother Barry (no, not that Barry White). A decent guy, or so I'm told.

Re: Joe D, he's the epitome of the good ol' days mentality. Legend has it he walked uphill both to and from school.

If he did it without shoes on, then he can live up to Cincy status.

He's right. But nothing will change/can be done about it.

Not true. That's where coaching comes in. Coaching is more than X's and O's. It's motivating your players to perform. I think UB is a great example of how much difference a coach can make. Turner Gill took a team of guys who were the worst team in D1 football and got them to a bowl and a title game. Now you can argue that college and the pros are completely different, but great coaches know how to get players to perform. If it's true that Bills players don't care about winning, then we have the wrong coaches on this team.

I don't believe it's as simple as saying Bills players don't care about winning. I just think mediocrity has seeped into this organization at all levels. Great organizations take pride in every detail with winning a Super Bowl always being the end goal. Meanwhile, Ralph is busy giving up a home game to make an extra $4-5m per year. Then it just feeds on itself having to over-pay free agents to come here with a sort of self-selection of players who had to be over-paid to come here. It desperately calls for a Coughlin-like coach to start kicking some a$$ and chase the losers out of town.

Joe D. is a bitter former player. I can't believe that WGR has let him just run his mouth the last couple of years about how badly former players are treated. That sucks to be you Joe, but this isn't open mic night at WGR!

File this recommendation away with the Jim Kelly/Frank Reich/Steve Tasker for Bills coaches posts from over the last 5-10 years.

Why is he bitter? He wants the old timers to get a better pension.

He was small even back in the day. But he still destroyed the guys he faced with superb technique and passion.
