Hey Buffalo, do whatever it takes to get Peppers

It's very unlikely Buffalo gets Peppers for a couple reasons.

1. He will be re-signed or at the least franchised by Carolina.

The Panthers can't Franchise Peppers...Well they can...but His Salary would be outrageous...He has to make the average of the Top 5 DE's OR 120% of his 2008 Salary whatever is GREATER...Peppers 2008 Salary is almost $12 million so a Franchise Tag would be near impossible...Also The Panthers have Jordan Gross and Chris Gamble entering Free Agency in 2008...2 key Starters at LT and CB...Peppers is a great Player but He's not as popular as You would think down here...Many Folks do not believe He's worth the cash so it will be REAL interesting to see what The Panthers do with Him leading up to the 2009 Off Season...:D

Allowing excellent players like Peppers to hit the UFA market is not the way to build a team. Besides, who drafts players that excel and then allows them to leave in UFA after their initial contract? Well, outside of Buffalo.

Peppers has come on this year, after a poor 2007 season. I suspect Carolina knows there are teams who would love him. So they'll franchise him and then trade him for something. He's not hitting the open market, much like Corey Williams didn't last year with Green Bay.

If you're a team with plenty of cap room like KC, wouldn't you make that deal?

IIRC correctly, Carolina re-signed Travelle Wharton and franchised Jordan Gross. They also drafted Jeff Otah, and I'm sure he can handle the RT spot. So re-signing Gross isn't a huge thing, and Gamble, well CB's aren't impossible to replace like franchise DE's.

Well...The CB I'll agree with You...But The Panthers OL was brutal in 2007...Yes they Drafted Otah and move Wharton to OG but that was by design because Wharton was getting beat like a rented mule at OT...The addition of Otah along with moving Wharton inside has been a pretty big success so far...I don't think The Panthers want to mess with the O-Line...

Don't get Me wrong...I understand The Panthers want to keep Peppers...I only question whether or not they want to do it at all costs...It's tough to understand this situation outside of Charlotte...Peppers became the Cities whipping boy last Year and there are a lot of bad memories still...There's still plenty of Folks around here who want to run Peppers out of Town...There is not one single NFL Player who is more scrutinized on a week to week basis than Peppers...They literally break down every Down He Plays on Mondays...How many times he is double teamed, how Many times He drops into Coverage...it's really a bit insane...Also, Peppers is simply not the world beater some think He is...He does not get double teamed nearly as much as He did early in His career, and He does get shut out by average to inferior OT's from time to time...And remember He Plays LDE not RDE so He's gone up against some REAL average OT's over the Years...The question is, do You give $100 million plus to a DE who is only one Season removed from getting a mear 2.5 Sacks?...Just one Season removed from a perfomance many in Carolina felt was lacking effort on most Sundays...There is a reason this deal is not already done, and I can guarantee that reason is 2007... :D

I think everyone knows now the value of a consistent pass rush. Teams that have one generally win games, and those that don't have secondaries that get picked apart.

I also suspect his salary brings so the criticism, much like Vanek did in Buffalo. Both teams are smaller markets, and their fan base isn't big city who cares how much they make type fans.

Carolina is 8-3 and in a good position to win the NFC South. Even though their impression of him isn't the same, I think the Panthers know it's a buyer's market and get a decent amount for him.

I wouldn't give him the contract he's going to get, but tell that to a team with no pass rush and nothing to show for in the past few season. There are some teams out there with money burning a hole in their collective pocket. And I don't see Buffalo making that move.
