BILLS: Slumping squad can’t afford another loss

They can try to sugarcoat it any way they want, and the Buffalo Bills certainly gave it a good shot last week.

But whether they want to believe it or not, their season is on the brink of extinction Sunday at Arrowhead Stadium.

”We just have to go and win, no matter if it’s win ugly, win great, we have to go get a win and that’s where our minds are right now,” said center Duke Preston. ”It’s not panic, but we know we’re going to have to go on a pretty good run to close the season and get this thing done.”

Some would argue that it’s already done and that Monday night’s loss to Cleveland was the death blow to a season that started so magnificently but now seems doomed to end so morosely.

Not the Bills, who, as Preston seemed to insinuate, think that despite their 5-5 record, their last-place standing in the AFC East, the tiebreaker jail they’re in, and a very difficult final quarter of the schedule on tap in December, they’re still right in the thick of the AFC playoff chase.

”Coach (Dick) Jauron has made it known that we’re still even (.500), there are teams still below us, and if we reel off six in a row we’re right back in there,” said offensive tackle Langston Walker. ”We may not win the division, but we might get a wild-card.”

Kudos to Preston and Walker for putting on smiley faces, but given the way the Bills have played for the past month, it’s difficult to agree with their assessment.

The Bills are in Kansas City to take on the 1-9 Chiefs and if they manage to lose this game, only the mathematicians will be able to concoct a scenario that has them still in contention for an AFC playoff berth.
