The Dean
So what if the local branch of the store closes. Use your gift card online. Exactly, that's why I asked earlier. Of course, it doesn't work so well with restaurants...but why would anyone give somebody a restaurant gift card? "Here, have dinner on us...but you have to eat it here." DC Tom
I will take an old wrinkled dirty $50, if it is trashing up your wallet. BTW, do gift cards work for online purchases? While I would also avoid gift cards for businesses in trouble, if they close a retail location near you, can you use the card on their online store? Never seen any that wouldn't. Borders, Barnes and Noble, Brookstone, Rockler, Woodcraft, Home Depot, Bed Bath & Beyond...I've used them all online. My father gives me Rockler gift cards every Christmas ("Dad, the nearest Rockler to me is in Pittsburgh." "Uhhh...what?' "Never mind.") Never had a problem using them online. "Don't buy Home Depot gift cards because 15 locations are closing" is one of the stupidest things I've heard today. Home Depot has more than 15 locations...I think there's three within walking distance of my house.

They can also be used for call in orders from catalogs for the old farts that don't have internet like my parents.

Just Jack
What do you mean? Where you pay a portion with a gift card, and the remainder with a credit card.
BillsWatch
There are also sites where you can trade gift cards. It does not work if they are out of business but otherwise it does. Of course you could sell them on ebay - seen a number of closed store doors items. If you complain they will say it was not posted as valid and you could have bought them for collector value. I agree about gift cards in general; a racket unless you get them for free or at least a discount.
Chef Jim
Where you pay a portion with a gift card, and the remainder with a credit card. I've never had a challenge that. Isn't that the whole point of gift cards? You're given one for $25 and you end up spending $50.

HelloNewman
Where you pay a portion with a gift card, and the remainder with a credit card. ????? I have not run into that so far (maybe I am the exception) but usually the allow you to redeem the gift card....update your total then pay the balance with a credit card..... Ummm... what you wrote is exactly what I said. For example... Total comes to $35 You have a $25 Gift Card So you pay the final $10 with a credit card (or cash, etc if you're in a store)
mcjeff215
As you know if you buy a gift card and the store closes down, you are basically screwed. I received this list of stores that are closing down or closing many locations, but are STILL selling gift card to unsuspecting consumers. Be careful if you are a gift card buyer.. Circuit City (filed Chapter 11) Ann Taylor 117 stores nationwide closing Lane Bryant, Fashion Bug ,and Catherine's to close 150 stores nationwide Eddie Bauer to close stores 27 stores and more after January Cache will close all stores Talbots closing down specialty stores J. Jill closing all stores (owned by Talbots) Pacific Sunwear (also owned by Talbots) GAP closing 85 stores Footlocker closing 140 stores more to close after January Wickes Furniture closing down Levitz closing down remaining stores Bombay closing remaining stores Zales closing down 82 stores and 105 after January Whitehall closing all stores Piercing Pagoda closing all stores Disney closing 98 stores and will close more after January. Home Depot closing 15 stores 1 in NJ ( New Brunswick ) Macys to close 9 stores after January Linens and Things closing all stores Movie Galley Closing all stores Pep Boys Closing 33 stores Sprint/Nextel closing 133 stores JC Penney closing a number of stores after January Ethan Allen closing down 12 stores. Wilson Leather closing down all stores Sharper Image closing down all stores K B Toys closing 356 stores Loews to close down some stores Dillard's to close some stores Yvonne Pulido I don't understand gift cards. What's the benefit? If they came with a 10% discount or something, then they would make sense. They simply lock you in to one store and some of them even expire.
