theesir Posted November 20, 2008 Posted November 20, 2008 As you know if you buy a gift card and the store closes down, you are basically screwed. Bullpen Posted November 20, 2008 Posted November 20, 2008 And to think I was going to get Beersphere a gift card from Fashion Bug... actually Fashion Bug Plus.
WWVaBeach Posted November 20, 2008 Posted November 20, 2008 I had received the same list via email. If you want to still go the gift card route it probably is safe to give one of those Master Card or Visa gift cards. Don't ya think?

If you want to still go the gift card route it probably is safe to give one of those Master Card or Visa gift cards. Don't ya think? What kills me about those is you pay a fee for them... say $33 for a $30 gift card, and THEN the CC company charges the merchant a fee when they except the card as payment. The credit card companies simply print their own money.
The Poojer Posted November 20, 2008 Posted November 20, 2008 Circuit City is honoring Gift Cards, and is not planning on closing any more than the previously announce 155 stores....I am sure the others are honoring gift cards also....oh and CC warranties are safe as well, they are and always have been through a 3rd party vendor As you know if you buy a gift card and the store closes down, you are basically screwed. Just shove a new crisp $20 in the envelope and save yourself a headache.
KD in CA Posted November 20, 2008 Posted November 20, 2008 What kills me about those is you pay a fee for them... say $33 for a $30 gift card, and THEN the CC company charges the merchant a fee when they except the card as payment. The credit card companies simply print their own money. Not to mention about 40% of them are never redeemed. Gift cards are a money printing business.

If you want to still go the gift card route it probably is safe to give one of those Master Card or Visa gift cards. Don't ya think? I hate those things. Merchants never seem to know how to process them and you have to keep track of the exact balance yourself.

Wacka Posted November 20, 2008 Posted November 20, 2008 I think some of this list is old. Here, the Linens and things and Sharper images stores closed months ago. Levitz closed during the summer.
stuckincincy Posted November 20, 2008 Posted November 20, 2008 What ever happen to the good old days? Just shove a new crisp $20 in the envelope and save yourself a headache. In the good old days...it was a new crisp $1.

theesir Posted November 20, 2008 Author Posted November 20, 2008 Linens and Things is still open. I just checked out their great "deals" the other day. Yeah, me too, most items 20% off, but you can no longer use the 20% off coupons they used to make available
Tux of Borg Posted November 20, 2008 Posted November 20, 2008 I bought a Blockbuster gift card for my brother a few years back. The day after Christmas the local store, whom sold me the card a week earlier, closed up shop for good. Bastards...
WWVaBeach Posted November 20, 2008 Posted November 20, 2008 In the good old days...it was a new crisp $1. Damn! How old are you?
The Dean Posted November 20, 2008 Posted November 20, 2008 In the good old days...it was a new crisp $1. I will take an old wrinkled dirty $50, if it is trashing up your wallet. BTW, do gift cards work for online purchases? While I would also avoid gift cards for businesses in trouble, if they close a retail location near you, can you use the card on their online store?
IDBillzFan Posted November 20, 2008 Posted November 20, 2008 Not to mention about 40% of them are never redeemed. Gift cards are a money printing business. Someone game me a $50 gift card to Macaroni Grill. I simply forgot about the thing, and then found it a couple of years later. Tried to use, and it actually lost value over the two years it was in hiding, and was valued at something like $3.50. Great work if you can get it.
mead107 Posted November 20, 2008 Posted November 20, 2008 If you google some of the stores they have no current closing . a lot of them are from this past spring or last year .
Just Jack Posted November 21, 2008 Posted November 21, 2008 BTW, do gift cards work for online purchases? While I would also avoid gift cards for businesses in trouble, if they close a retail location near you, can you use the card on their online store? I know Best Buy you can, I've used them online and done "in store pickup".
