What's the deal with these Pirates off Somalia?

My reason for asking was not as a veiled criticism of our actions then. Rather, you simply seemed unaware that there is no functioning government in Somalia capable of policing the pirates. A youngster can be excused for assuming otherwise, but people who remember those days generally remember the lawlessness of that failed state if they remember anything at all. It seemed a stretch to accuse the government of complicity when do not even have civil police, let alone a navy.

Some of the wackos here want no fuctioning gov't in the US...:D And before you crack, we do function... Of course we could function bigger and better!

Isn't Somalia a libertarians dream come true?

On another note: Wasn't the British economy built by pirates? <_< I forgot, the English didn't call the ones raiding the Spanish main pirates, they were "privateers."

Thank you Elizabeth and your Sea Dog Drake! You really brought England into prominence.

My point... I guess there will always be pirates or Pirvateers... Which ever way you look at it.

Well, we were in a low level war with Spain for most of her reign. And a more high intensity one for much of the rest of it.

There were several attempts by the Spanish to invade England, essentially a crusade against those who had turned against Rome's authority. We had to pay for the defence of England somehow - using Spanish gold to do so probably seemed a good idea at the time...

The seizure and confiscation of an enemy state's assets at sea has been a tactic of war since forever.

But the point about Drake (and others) is accurate. A great captain, admiral, seaman and, ahem, pirate.

A little broadening of the horizons, coutesy of the Indian press:

Not just the Indians going after them. French commandos took out a group after they had been paid a ransom for going after French nationals. Also the Royal Navy captured a pirate vessel (possibly a dhow), killing a couple of those on board in the process.

Piracy are a reaql problem for trade, and a lot of countries have ships there to try and ensure safety. But it is a big ocean...

His raid on Cadiz was incredible. Singed Phillip's beard.

The trio were airlifted to safety by a German naval helicopter and flown to a French frigate after the vessel summoned assistance from coalition warships. They were later transferred to a British Royal Navy ship. All three were unhurt, Davis said.

"I have spoken with my team leader on the phone and he informs me that the level of violence was significant and forced them reluctantly to leave the vessel after every effort was made to ensure the safety of the ships crew," Davis said.

Pirates continued to shoot at the three in the water, Davis said. "The hijacked vessel with pirates in control then attempted to run them down."

Oh boy, Iran joins the battle. :wallbash:

Is this a good thing or a bad thing?

TEHRAN, Iran (CNN) -- A group of Iranian warships steamed into the Gulf of Aden, joining an expanding list of navies sent to protect shipping routes from Somali pirates, state-run media reported Saturday.

"Some local officials suspect..."

"..may contain materials that can be used for chemical or biological weapons."

Oh My God!!!! Faux Snooze has found more circumstantial evidence that there might be materials that could be used to make chemical or biological agents like fertilizers or insecticides being shipped to Iran!

And now the Pirates MIGHT have those things (or they might not...).

THIS PROVES THE NEO-CONS WERE RIGHT! INVADE IRAN NOW!

Actually, i believe it was the Long War Journal that originally broke the story. It has also been reported that the Somali pirates that hijacked this ship suffered skin burns, lost hair, and died a week later. But hey, pass the kool-aid and let's pretend that the world is a perfect place.

Most ships do. Hell, my friggin' workshop contains materials that can be used for chemical or biological weapons.

Great job, Fox, "breaking" another story. Can you tell me what color the sky is now?

Does anyone know what the FBI tip line number is?

 My wife made me get rid of my bioreactor, sadly.

I mix my own wood finishes (shellac, varnish, stains). A few of the solvents, while not too dangerous on their own, are CW precursors.

Don't forget those Aum Shinrikyo !@#$os...they made a credible nerve gas on their own (and apparently would have done better, but they were forced to rush their purification). You generally can't walk in to the local Wal-Mart and buy this sh-- off the shelf...but the chemicals aren't that uncommon.

Ransom drop off Somali coast.

Article.

It is funny in a macabre way that four died and one pirate gets all the cash that didn't fall off the boat. Four out of five dead. That's a shame. B-)

I understand that one country can't violate Somali waters without some sort of UN approval but this out of hand. If Iran, Iraq, Saudi Arabia and the USA just waited til these A-holes were safely far enough away and then just bombed the $#!+ out of them I wonder if this would stop or decrease a whole lot.

Let the international outrage go against several countries not just one.

I also don't understand why Navy Seals couldn't board these ships and capture these A-holes?

The U.S. Navy said on Thursday it was planning to launch a force to combat piracy in the Gulf of Aden, an offshoot of an earlier mission. Chinese warships also began anti-piracy patrols off Somalia this week.

Yeah the US and Chinese and possibly Iranian navies operating that close in proximity to each might not cause problems...
