In addition to concerns about e-mail security, he faces the Presidential Records Act, which puts his correspondence in the official record and ultimately up for public review, and the threat of subpoenas. A decision has not been made on whether he could become the first e-mailing president, but aides said that seemed doubtful. For all the perquisites and power afforded the president, the chief executive of the United States is essentially deprived by law and by culture of some of the very tools that other chief executives depend on to survive and to thrive. Mr. Obama, however, seems intent on pulling the office at least partly into the 21st century on that score; aides said he hopes to have a laptop computer on his desk in the Oval Office, making him the first American president to do so. Can he no longer email the members of his fantasy football league anymore, or does he just need to do it and everything else from the presidential addy? Of course, being the president he can probably requisition a deck of cards... But seriously, that's the political class for you - it's all yackety-yack briefings and meetings and reading one page summaries. You don't write your own legislation, you don't actually read what you are voting on, and you don't write out your own positions. And you certainly don't have to understand any of it. Or we could just admit the idea that a working knowledge of accepted technology as a qualification is a load of BS. Either way...can we all agree that RkFast doesn't know how the world works? I would still strongly argue that knowing how the global economy has been drastically changed by technology and how it works is hugely important. And that knowledge doesn't replace the earlier knowledge of how people did it without, it simply adds on to make your ever-growing knowledge more complete. It shouldn't be a qualification as in you must be more than 35, a natural born citizen, have lived here consecutively for a number of years and have a working knowledge of accepted technology, but it should be an unofficial qualification, as in, if you don't know how to use a computer, you're out of touch and we shouldn't vote for you for "Cell President" let alone US President. I had an instructor back at uni who was a speechwriter for a former CT governor. This was back in the early '80s. There was a function at the WH for which they were invited. His wallet was stolen in DC. The security gate had a full-color picture of his driver's license and verified his info w/in 5 minutes. And as I said, this was in the early '80s. In keeping with presidential records laws, all communications need to be archived. There's no personal email for the prez. His West Wing staff have their own, if memory serves this was a point of contention in the Plame scandal for Rove whether emails from those machines/addresses are covered by executive privilege. Historically --- and going to current day --- presidents who wish to send anyone a message had/have to go through the WH secretary or... do it in person, I guess. If not for work, the prez should be able to use email for personal use, I'm sure knowing the FBI and CIA is reading every email he sends would be enough of a deterrent to use it carefully.
