Obama will likely have to give up his Blackberry & email

But before he arrives at the White House, he will probably be forced to sign off. In addition to concerns about e-mail security, he faces the Presidential Records Act, which puts his correspondence in the official record and ultimately up for public review, and the threat of subpoenas. A decision has not been made on whether he could become the first e-mailing president, but aides said that seemed doubtful.

For all the perquisites and power afforded the president, the chief executive of the United States is essentially deprived by law and by culture of some of the very tools that other chief executives depend on to survive and to thrive. Mr. Obama, however, seems intent on pulling the office at least partly into the 21st century on that score; aides said he hopes to have a laptop computer on his desk in the Oval Office, making him the first American president to do so.

I read that this morning as well. Does the pres really have to give up/stop using all of his own personal correspondence? Can he no longer email the members of his fantasy football league anymore, or does he just need to do it and everything else from the presidential addy?

On another note, what kind of spam filter does the white house have? Does the pres still get the occasional pen1s enlargement email?

Can you imagine what it must be like to sit at a desk for hours, without a computer?

Of course, being the president he can probably requisition a deck of cards...

But seriously, that's the political class for you - it's all yackety-yack briefings and meetings and reading one page summaries. You don't write your own legislation, you don't actually read what you are voting on, and you don't write out your own positions. And you certainly don't have to understand any of it. You just herd the staffers and convince others to support things that they have not read either.

Remember all the "concern" over a President's "need" to use e-mail and other modern tools of communication in order to stay "in touch"?

Yeah, me neither.

You don't because it never existed. People were saying if you don't know how to even get your own email, or use a computer, you don't know how the world works. Not at all that you will need to use it as President. I would say nice try, but it wasn't even a nice try. Go back in your hole.

Given that most of the world doesn't have email, I'm more likely to believe that IF you think the world is centered around email you probably don't know how the world works.

But then, most of the world probably still subsistence farms...so one could then argue that if you don't know how to use a hoe, you don't know how the world works.

Or we could just admit the idea that a working knowledge of accepted technology as a qualification is a load of BS.

Either way...can we all agree that RkFast doesn't know how the world works?

I would still strongly argue that knowing how the global economy has been drastically changed by technology and how it works is hugely important. And that knowledge doesn't replace the earlier knowledge of how people did it without, it simply adds on to make your ever-growing knowledge more complete. It shouldn't be a qualification as in you must be more than 35, a natural born citizen, have lived here consecutively for a number of years and have a working knowledge of accepted technology, but it should be an unofficial qualification, as in, if you don't know how to use a computer, you're out of touch and we shouldn't vote for you for "Cell President" let alone US President.

We can, however, all agree that RKF doesn't know how the world works.

A comment on the WH computer systems.... I had an instructor back at uni who was a speechwriter for a former CT governor. This was back in the early '80s. There was a function at the WH for which they were invited. His wallet was stolen in DC. The security gate had a full-color picture of his driver's license and verified his info w/in 5 minutes. And as I said, this was in the early '80s.

In keeping with presidential records laws, all communications need to be archived. There's no personal email for the prez. His West Wing staff have their own, if memory serves this was a point of contention in the Plame scandal for Rove whether emails from those machines/addresses are covered by executive privilege. Historically --- and going to current day --- presidents who wish to send anyone a message had/have to go through the WH secretary or... do it in person, I guess.

Why would Obama need male enhancement? He's black. :wallbash:

Youre right.

I DONT know how the world works.

Thats why I come to PPP, to get my "info" from the screaming libs, government contractors, techno fans, cross-dressers, and maniacs who have delusions they are one of the Founding Fathers and/or dogs.

Im gonna head over to the main board now to join one of the brillant discussions about gloves and beards.

Oh, and Kell...my "hole" is loaded with porn and booze. Youre welcome to come over and party anytime, my friend.

That was a great article, think he will have to go to Blackberry rehab?

I get the security risk, but the White House has to modernize. If not for work, the prez should be able to use email for personal use, I'm sure knowing the FBI and CIA is reading every email he sends would be enough of a deterrent to use it carefully.

This is BS about being the first president with a laptop.

I remember a picture of Bush with an Apple laptop on his desk. And before people comment, yes, he was using it.

I am sure you are getting confused with your laps and fruits... That was a lapdance done to Cherry Pie. And I bet he was "using it." Oh, wait... That may have been Clinton.
