Buffalo's DT's

In 2006, the Bills signed Larry Tripplett to a 5 yr 18.5M contract with a 5.5M SB. He is now out of the league. That same year, the Bills traded 2nd and 3rd rounders to the Bears to move up to 26th overall to take McCargo. Kyle Williams was selected in the fifth round.

Buffalo did little at DT in 07, save for a non-move with Darwin Walker. In 06 and 07, Buffalo gave up 140 and 125 yrpg respectively. The only question is how the Bills would address their interior DL for 08.

Those concerns appeared answered when Buffalo traded a 3rd and 5th to Jacksonville for Stroud and reworked his 5 yr 31.5M contract which he signed with the Jags in 05. Next, they signed Spencer Johnson to a 5 yr 17.5M contract with 6M guaranteed.

I can't believe that after spending 1st and 5th round picks, combined with giving up a 2nd, 2 3rds, a 5th, and signing 2 FA's while trading for another big name player that the Bills still can't stop the run.

This DT problem is a microcosm of why the Bills are stuck in neutral and not going anywhere this season. Step 1 is hiring a real GM.

stopping the run isn't close to being our biggest problem. and i say that with sadness.

Huh? The average run against the Bills is 3.7 yards, the 9th best in the NFL. They have improved from 4.4 YPC last season to 3.7 YPC this year, and have allowed only 6 runs of 20+ yards and 0 runs of 40+ yards. They do a pretty good job stopping the run...this is not an issue....the Patriots ran 43 times today for 144 yards, or a paltry 3.3 yards per carry....

If our ends could ever generate any upfield pressure, we would be in much better shape....

Exactly. Stopping the run isn't so much an issue. It's stopping a crossing route. Or a 3rd and 7, line up 10-15 yards off the line, let the WR catch the ball and tackle him after 10yds. Why with all these DB we can't play good press coverage is beyond rediculous.

And how many times on third and short does our opponent convert running the ball? You don't own the ball for 38 minutes without getting first downs via the running game. UDFA BenJarvus Green Ellis Jauron Wilson Smith Jones ran for 105 yards today.

As SoCal mentioned, the entire front office must be nuked. That means a real GM, new pro personnel director, and finding better minds that will advocate getting rid of the coaching staff.

The DT position just demonstrates how badly they FO errors when it comes to fixing obvious problems.

OK, and they also held LT to 41 yards on 14 carries(2.9), Fred Taylor and MJD had a combined 66 yards on 21 carries(3.1), Edgerrin James 57 yards 21 carries(2.7 YPC), Ronnie Brown and Ricky Williams 59 yards on 21 carries(2.8)...we have a solid run defense. The stats back this up pretty solidly. We cannot stop the short passing game because we can't get pressure on the QB and refuse to play tight coverage. Stopping the run is not really much of a worry right now---you are just trying way too hard to make this an issue when its really a non-issue, and is actually a strength of the team...

While I wouldn't say stopping the run is our biggest issue, stats don't always tell the true story of a game or a team's performance. You listed our rank against the run and the Patriots' ypc today but when it was clutch time during the game like around 9 minutes left in the 4th when we needed a stop (there was plenty enough time for a comeback) to get the ball back the Patriots ran it down our throats eating up almost all the clock and they scored as well running the ball on that same drive to add insult to injury. When it really matters, no we can't stop the run despite what the stats say.
