After a less than stellar and not so exciting Adult Season passes on, November moves in to pick up the slack with this year's Holiday Season. The Tentpole films of the holidays offer a much different variety than in Summer as there will be a little something for everyone. Family films, Christmas themes, a few Action packed moments & lots of Oscar potential will flood the screens for the next 2 months. Even though the boy wizard decided to jump from this Holiday Season to Summer 2009, the studios should still find plenty of box office dough.

Daniel Craig is back as the Blonde James Bond in "Quantum of Solace". Picking up where Casino Royale left off, and seeking revenge for the death of his love, secret agent James Bond sets out to stop an environmentalist from taking control of a country's water supply. Olga Kurylenko, Mathieu Amalric & Judi Dench co-star.

When Warner Bros. moved "Harry Potter & The Half-Blood Prince" back to Summer 2009, Summit Entertainment immediately flew in and placed "Twilight" in the late November slot. Based on the novel by Stephanie Meyer, Misfit teenager Bella Swan falls for her alluring and mysterious classmate, Edward Cullen. As it turns out, Edward belongs to a lineage of vampires, although he doesn't fit the typical vampire mold. Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson & Billy Burke star.

3 years and 400 million dollars later, Dreamworks follows up their animated hit Madagascar with "Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa". This time, Alex the lion and his friends board an NYC-bound plane, that's been "repaired" by their penguin pals, only to find themselves touching down in the African plains. Starring the voices of Ben Stiller, Chris Rock, Jada Pinkett Smith, David Schwimmer, Sacha Baron Cohen, Cedric the Entertainer, Bernie Mac & Alec Baldwin.

Walt Disney Pictures brings in their latest CGI animated film "Bolt". Bolt is a celebrity dog and the star of a hit TV show where his amazing feats and powers draw big ratings. But when a mail-room mix-up finds him roaming free on the streets of New York City, the wonder dog will have to learn to rely on his actual strengths in order to find his way back home. Starring the voices of John Travolta, Malcolm McDowell, Susie Essman & Miley Cyrus.

Director Baz Luhrman looks for both box office and Oscar gold with his latest film "Australia", starring Nicole Kidman & Hugh Jackman. Set in northern Australia before World War II, an English aristocrat who inherits a sprawling ranch reluctantly pacts with a stock-man in order to protect her new property from a takeover plot. As the pair drive 2,000 head of cattle over unforgiving landscape, they experience the bombing of Darwin, Australia, by Japanese forces firsthand.

Reese Witherspoon and Vince Vaughn star in "Four Christmases", a comedy about a married couple from two divorced families who are tasked with attending four Christmas Day celebrations. Robert Duvall, Jon Voigt, Sissy Spacek, Mary Steenburgen, Jon Favreau & Kristin Chenoweth co-star.

Jason Statham returns in "Transporter 3", this is the third chapter of the action trilogy centered on Frank Martin, the former mercenary who reinvented himself as a specialist in moving goods of all kinds.

Samuel L. Jackson & Bernie Mac star in "Soul Men". Though it's been some twenty years since they have spoken with one another, two estranged soul-singing legends agree to participate in a reunion performance at the Apollo Theater to honor their recently deceased band leader.

In "Role Models", Unsavory behavior forces a pair of energy-drink reps to enroll in a Big Brother program, where the duo learn, however reluctantly, to bond with their assigned kids. Starring Paul Rudd, Sean William Scott & Elizabeth Banks.

In "House", A freak accident strands a couple on a deserted back road in Alabama. Happening upon the Wayside Inn, they meet another couple -- victims of a similar accident -- and thus begins a game enacted by a killer known as the Tin Man. Starring Michael Madsen, Reynaldo Rosales & Heidi Dippold.

In "Repo! The Genetic Opera", A worldwide epidemic encourages a biotech company to launch an organ-financing program similar in nature to a standard car loan. Too bad the repossession clause is a killer. Starring Paul Sorvino, Anthony Stewart Head, Alexa Vega, Sarah Brightman & Paris Hilton.

  • 4 weeks later...

I saw an interesting and immensely enjoyable movie over the long weekend. Slumdog Millionaire a Brit film made in the Bollywood style (story, actors, setting all in India), that won a Toronto film festival award and recently opened to a very limited US release. Reviews have been off the charts and critics are talking Oscars. I suspect it may be a movie that builds an audience over the next several weeks from word of mouth and increased exposure. Anyone else see it yet?

Saw Twilight over the weekend, I thought it was a very good movie. It was entertaining, decent amount of action and a good story line. One thing I was impressed with was the accurate portrayal of the vampire, what they are and what they can and cannot do.

Good date movie as well.

Sorry for being late on this.

Here are November's Independent Films.

"Slumdog Millionaire" is the story of how impoverished Indian teen Jamal Malik became a contestant on the Hindi version of "Who Wants to be A Millionaire?" -- an endeavor made without prize money in mind, rather, an effort to prove his love for his friend Latika, who is an ardent fan of the show. Starring Dev Patel & Freida Pinto.

In "The Boy in the Striped Pajamas", A WWII-set story as seen through the eyes of Bruno, whose Nazi-Officer father has just been made the commandant of a concentration camp outside Berlin. Bruno's eventual friendship with Shmuel, a boy his age who is detained at the camp, will usher in a troublesome reality for Bruno, and lead to a fateful attempt to alter Shmuel's situation. Starring Asa Butterfield, David Thewlis & Rupert Friend.

Sean Penn, Emile Hirsch, Josh Brolin & James Franco star in "Milk". A chronicle of Harvey Milk's ascent to become San Francisco's first openly gay city supervisor in 1977, and the political fallout that led to his assassination, as well as Mayor George Moscone's, the following year.

In "Christmas Tale", The Vuillard family's history of physical and mental illness, estrangement, self harm, and loss doesn't lead itself to the idea of a cheerful holiday season. But can a Christmastime reunion, a scheme concocted by three of the youngest family members, finally bring peace their clan? Starring Catherine Deneuve, Jean-Paul Roussillon & Mathieu Amalric.

In "Special", A lonely metermaid has a psychotic reaction to his medication and becomes convinced he's a superhero. Starring Michael Rapaport.
