Wacka
This is not a joke as far as I could tell. Here is an interesting paragraph(bold mine): The Obama Administration will call on Americans to serve in order to meet the nation’s challenges. President-Elect Obama will expand national service programs like AmeriCorps and Peace Corps and will create a new Classroom Corps to help teachers in underserved schools, as well as a new Health Corps, Clean Energy Corps, and Veterans Corps. Obama will call on citizens of all ages to serve America, by developing a plan to require 50 hours of community service in middle school and high school and 100 hours of community service in college every year. Obama will encourage retiring Americans to serve by improving programs available for individuals over age 55, while at the same time promoting youth programs such as Youth Build and Head Start. RI Bills Fan
You guys seem to have missed the first paragraph... "When you choose to serve -- whether it's your nation, your community or simply your neighborhood -- you are connected to that fundamental American ideal that we want life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness not just for ourselves, but for all Americans. That's why it's called the American dream." So by asking Americans to volunteer and serve in the area of their choice he's betraying us to the ravenous barbarian socialist muslim hordes of communistic volunteer student old fogies! Gasp! The Horror! The Horror!
Kelly the Dog
That's just a bad page on their site, and I would expect them to change it soon. It's very confusing. On another page they say it more clear: They set a goal to get kids in middle school and high school to do 50 hours a year. Most schools have some kind of programs now like that, although not that much time. It may be that they tie in monetary support for the schools that get the kids to do the service. I like that idea. The 100 hours for college kids is mandatory if you or your parents take a $4000 tax credit for each year for tuition. In other words, do 100 hours community service and we'll pay $4K of your schooling. That was part of his campaign. The other programs are either voluntary or expanded programs like Peace Corps. Boone Pickens, I'm certain he is a devout Communist. I think it's back to school for you, Boomer. But, keep in mind, if you take the govt's $$, you may have to give something back in service. It's the knee-jerk school of Limbaugh Conservatism. If (in this case) Obama is for it, it is necessarily bad. End of story!

So in order to go to a public school you have to do this in other words pay the school tax than to what he says Incidently that PIG comment is a requirement, no joke IF you live in NYS you should know that. Kelly the Dog
I have no problem with mandated community service if it's in exchange for the college tax credit. I think that's a really good idea. The Americorps types of programs are the same although I don't know how much time you have to put in. I think it if you volunteer you get $4725 toward your college tuition or to pay off student loans.
Chef Jim
I have no problem with mandated community service if it's in exchange for the college tax credit. But it says nothing about a tax credit there. Is it just, as Kelly says, poorly written and taken out of context?
udonkey
I'm not suggesting that this is good or bad, but 100 hours/year is less than 2 hours/week.
