Most Italians I know refer to themselves as "Italian-American" (or sometimes simply "Italian"). "American of Italian descent" would be more correct, but that's not how people refer to these things, in normal conversation.

Out here we refer to ourselves at the Americans of Italian Descent of Anaheim.

But we call JFK our first Catholic President. It doesn't imply that he was President of all the world's Catholics. So why can't we call Obama the first African American President?
