BillsVet Posted November 1, 2008 Share Posted November 1, 2008 We know Brett Favre is making many of the bad decisions for NYJ that he did in GB from 03-06 when he threw 85 INT's. The Bills meanwhile have only 4 INT's this season to show for in a defense that must get turnovers to be successful. Two of those are from Terrence McGee, who is still nursing a sore knee. If there is a time for the secondary to step up, it's this week. Favre will make risky throws should the Jets go down early. Obviously, the pass rush must show up, but I think Brett forces things again and this should provide the DB's a chance. Kansas City recorded only one sack of Favre last week, yet induced three picks. The Bills have lost two games this season in which QB's winged the ball short and Buffalo had no answer. Hopefully "bad" Brett comes to Buffalo this week and continues his bad throws. What struck me - once again - is the foresight of this front office. I must say, when Edwards was drafted, I thought that the collective brain trust had been living downwind of the acetone-cracking facility just a tad too long. No, it seems that I'M the one who was living downwind of the acetone-cracking facility a tad too long. When the front office drafted all those damn CBs this past year (see ya, Kennard Cox), I once again thought that the inbreeding laws that restrict marriage to anything beyond third cousins should be broadened. At least in Orchard Park. But here we are, desperate for more help at CB. Thank heavens they drafted as many as they have, and thank heavens for Jabari Greer. He's the last man standing. CB's are great to have, but Denver sports probably the best tandem in the league with Champ Bailey and Dre Bly. That could be argued, but the Broncos defense is dreadful. The pass rush must make themselves known on Sunday, although it's clear that having HOF DB's at both CB spots, FS, and SS doesn't make up for a bad group of DL. Priorities being what they are, DL, specifically veritable pass rushers will always be a priority unless you already have them. Over the past 4 games, Farve has just been playing badly, with lots of INTs, few long passes, and a low completion percentage. I think his old arm (and I mean McCain old) is just tired, and he's throwing up bad balls because sometimes those are the only ones he can throw. While you are correct that pressure could force Brett to become bad Brett, but I think it's just as important for our DBs (especially our safeties) to be constantly alert for the occasional wounded duck. If the Bills can finally get some pressure up the middle - which, quite frankly, I haven't seen since the Seattle game - there could be flocks of lame ducks flapping around out there. I don't want just a SINGLE interception tomorrow! If there's ANY quarterback in the league who is capable of a 4-interception game, it's certainly Brett Favre. Always has been, always will be. I think Youboty plays in this one, although McGee may not. That leaves Greer. Frankly, at this point in the season everyone has some injuries. It's all about who exploits the other teams' losses more. If there's a game to prove that the secondary can be true ball-hawks, this is it. I was dead-set against the idea of taking a first round corner both before the draft and since the draft, and if you need, I can provide multiple links to prove that. Tsaikotic Posted November 2, 2008 Share Posted November 2, 2008 how does our secondary match up with Jets recievers?...I know they have Coles who'll most likely see Greer covering him since right now he's our best CB fully healthy...McGee is back and although he was torched last week, he should be more towards 100% than he was vs. Miami...Youboty is back as the nickelback..ofcourse we have Whitner at 100%...how does Scott fit in this week?..I know hes big and physical, wich is good to cover TE's...the weakest link I see is Ellison at LB..hes a backup at best not a starter and he's at the LB position that covers on passing downs...so if any of you are familiar with Jets recievers, please tell me how we match up. I think, again in hindsight, taking a CB sets the Bills up with options when McKelvin begins understanding the pro game. McGee and Youboty go UFA after 09, with Greer hitting the market after 08. They can't sign them all, but having a few rookies signed long term gives them the opportunity to work them into the rotation. Fans that are expecting this team to generate a lot of interceptions and sacks are going to be disappointed. The Bills don't play a style of defense that generates a lot of those plays with the personnel that they have. Rushing generally with 4 average players only and playing a "keep it in front of you" style in the secondary without any pro-bowl caliber players. This is a very vanilla and average defense that will take advantage of mistakes by the opposing offense but does not pressure them into those mistakes very often. This fan base just has to hope it's "Bad Brett" (as you say) that shows up tomorrow. it's tough to get pressure when the opposing QB is 3 step dropping and getting the ball out on short passes the key to the game today is going to be scheme related.......the bills got picked apart by ARZ and MIA in the short passing game........they need to play more press coverage and take away the short routes......this will force farve into 5 and 7 steps drop and actually give the DL a chance at having time to get to him if the bills once again lay back in a passive cover 2 they will be picked apart as farve slowly and methodically marches them up the field.......i hope that fewell has learned his lesson Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
