K-Gun10 Posted October 28, 2008 Posted October 28, 2008 The figures against the pass By Chris Brown - Posted October 28th, 2008 Injuries have really, really hurt Buffalo’s secondary. It’s forced them to shuffle the lineup at corner, safety and in the subpackages and it’s likely forced defensive coordinator Perry Fewell to take a different approach to his play calling at times. Aaron Schobel’s absence from the pass rush has also hurt. Here are the figures following week 4 compared with the figures since then (last 3 games) that I wrote about on the home page. Bills defense vs. the pass 1st 4 games – ranking 6th – avg. yards allowed 168.5 Last 3 games – ranking 13th – avg. yards allowed 257.3 Completion pct. Allowed 1st 4 games – 49.6% Last 3 games – 76.2% Touchdowns vs. interceptions 1st 4 games – 2 TDs vs. 3 INTs Last 3 games – 5 TDs vs. 1 INT Opponent passer rating 1st 4 games – 64.3 Last 3 games – 109.8 Yards per attempt 1st 4 games – 6.17 Last 3 games – 7.64 Touchdown percentage 1st 4 games – 1.7% Last 3 games – 4.95% Sacks 1st 4 games – 10 Last 3 games – 3 Tags: Aaron Schobel, Bills secondary, Perry Fewell

JStranger76 Posted October 28, 2008 Posted October 28, 2008 I don't think many are saying we don't need Schobel, just that it would be nice to have a real pass rusher on the other side. #1 offseason priority folks. Denny goes bye bye and Kelsay is a extremely well paid second wave guy. Tough titty.
JStranger76 Posted October 28, 2008 Posted October 28, 2008 Or Kesay remains a starter for another year or two and we draft someone like George Selvie as a pass rush specialist until he is more prepared for a 3 down role.
bills44 Posted October 28, 2008 Posted October 28, 2008 It kind of helped that the Bills played crappy teams for the 1st four games of the season. Also, IIRC, he played most of the Arizona game.

I agree with you that another stud defensive end would be great. That was supposed to be Ellis but that's not working out. I think a DE should be a first or second round pick. It looks, so far, like the Ellis pick is a bust. Even if Ellis works out another DE and DT would be a good idea. I think a LB is a priority in the first two rounds too so a DT or DE would have to wait til the third round. Also, a TE needs to be somewhere in there.

JStranger76 Posted October 28, 2008 Posted October 28, 2008 I don't know if Ellis was supposed to be that stud DE but at least fill the Copland Bryan role. We may have to pay BIG bucks to a free agent DE or DT who has done it in this league to ensure we get immediate results.

Peppers is the only name that jumps out on the free agent list and he will be way out of our price range as a DE. Our best best is to draft that pass rush specialist in the Evil Dumerville type mold and let Denny/Kelsay handle 1st and second downs.
JStranger76 Posted October 28, 2008 Posted October 28, 2008 Right you are BillsGM. It will come down to you or me as the next Bills GM...... I already figured that scenario in my 2nd post in this thread so you'll have to do better!!!! Just kiddin man!!!
Tortured Soul Posted October 28, 2008 Posted October 28, 2008 This isn't an argument for Schobel. It's an argument for getting McGee and Youboty back and healthy.

He just isn't going to be an 'immediate impact' type of guy. With him being a middle 3rd round pick, I don't think that the coaching staff has expected him to be a contributor yet. Otherwise, they wouldn't have had 4 DE's already on the roster besides Ellis. At the beginning of the season, we had Schobel, Kelsey, Denney & Bryan all on the active roster. Interestingly enough, we just added another DE to the practice squad this week in Marcus Smith, who played the other end of the line at U of AZ with Copeland Bryan at OLB. 6'5, 295lbs.

Happens every season...every team wises up.
JStranger76 Posted October 28, 2008 Posted October 28, 2008 What is Youboty's exact injury anyways? It's always kind of undisclosed with him.
Jerry Jabber Posted October 28, 2008 Posted October 28, 2008 I think we need 2 solid DE's in the offseason.
Williams+Williams+Williams Posted October 28, 2008 Posted October 28, 2008 All that, and as the season progressed, the opposition as usual watched the films of the early games and figured things out. Happens every season...every team wises up. I like 94. But whether he is in the game or out of the game we need to pressure the QB. Arizona tore us apart because we were too afraid to give up the big play. Instead, we watched Kurt Warner and most recently, Chad Pennington, pass all over us like its 7 on 7 at training camp. The slow bleed is toturus to watch. Ive never liked the bend but dont break defense. I like a defense that attacks. An attacking defense develops an attitude. If you give up a big play every now and then, so what. Lets get after it. Philly, Pit, Baltimore, the giants....they all go after the QB. There is a reason why they are the top defenses in the league. They bring heat often. Id like to see our D get more aggresive. I havent seen a snot bubble hit all season out the defensive side of the ball.

Schobel is a very good DE, but is is definitely not a stud. People think he is, but he is the best we have
