Wow. Kicked Vernon Davis out of the game. Then says, I'd rather play with 10 guys on the field than have someone on the field that doesn't play for the team.

I'll say now that Singletary will be a very successful head coach in the NFL for a long time IMO. The guy has incredible guiding principles, leadership and determination. He's a proven winner as a player, a businessman and a man. A guy you root for.

I tend to agree with you. But... I'm not so sure. I think he's got a high probability of busting. Today's players don't seem to respond to the tough Coaches. I couldn't help but think he sounded a little Dennis Greenish to me. It'll be be interesting to see how the team responds.

In his first game he benched the starting QB and sent his starting TE to the showers. Maybe the team has a serious discipline problem. I don't know. But he definitely made it clear as to who's calling the shots now.

It's an old trick. Like Crash Davis said: "They're kids, scare them."

It isn't up on NFL.com,yet (at least from what I can see). What did Davis do (not do)? On the highlights, he chases down a Seattle player, after an INT, well after every other 49er had given up. He showed some nice speed, too. Now, he doesn't catch him until the guy scores, but he showed some real effort on that particular play. I wonder how he screwed up.

He made a catch just shy of a 1st down then jerked up the defenders face-mask while both walking back to the huddle (right in front of a side judge). Cost the niners 15.

After the play, he reached out and tapped the defensive player on the chin - 15 yard taunting penalty. That's why he got reamed by Singletary

I heard he took a stupid penalty by slapping another player in the head?

It's old school discipline. We'll see how it works on the new generation of players.

If he is fair and consistent with it, I like it, and think he will be OK. The problem is, many (if not most) "hard ass" coaches make the mistake of being very inconsistent in the enforcement of what can sometimes seem like trivial stuff. I'm not suggesting that what VD did was trivial (I have yet to see it). If he punishes the stars for the same infractions he enforces on those in his dog house, then fine. But, if he dogs a few players, and breaks their will and desire, while letting others get away with s#it, it will be a disaster, IMO.

If anyone can pull it off it will be Singletary. Everybody knows he practiced what he preaches and nobody can accuse him of being a phony.

It seemed fairly trivial to me. My take was that Singletary was ripping him on the sideline about it and VD just kinda sat there with a "whatever" look on his face. Singletary walked away, then came back a few minutes later and said something to the effect of with that attitude he would do the team the best good in the showers.

I was listening to the Niner's postgame and thecallers were all for Singletary. They were saying that the team needs someone to kick butt.
