I want to be the sweet (seemingly) little old man that, in the hospital/nursing home/doctor's office, calls the hot young nurse over and, while she bends down to hear what I am trying to say, I grab here boobs! That's what I see in my future, should I have one.

you arent there yet?

That's the most beautiful thing I've heard in a while.:ph34r:

LOL, haven't heard a dennis the menace reference in ages. Actually I did have a neighbor just like that who would threaten us when we played baseball and the tennis ball rolled from my yard to his. Never had the cops involved though...granted he did threaten to kill us a few times...we were much too fast for him

Which leads me to my next point. Elders should not be taking balls away from our youth, especially ones that are too slow to beat them in a foot race. They should be encouraging them to play because God know how out of shape a kid as to be to lose a footrace to an 89 year old.

Sadly, such things can escalate...

The perp was sent up for a time that will exceed his lifespan.

The downward spiral of society, etc. There's no end of people getting violent for dogs repeatedly dumping on property, pounding a neighbor's ears with loud music and the like. A long time ago, a nephew of mine got justly evicted from an apartment building for just that - he felt the had the absolute right to rattle others' walls with his ground-shaking speakers. An idiot...who didn't wise up until he bought his own house.

There are lots of folks that are genuinely surprised that when they trample on others because they feel they have the right to "spress themselves", the other fellow pushes back.

The "It's All About Me" philosophy that is prevalent, I suppose, is a contributor. "My Computer". "My Documents". My A**.

Not that people in times past were a bunch of angels - human nature being what it is. But deportment in general society was better - if only out of fear of being branded as a bad actor...which could cost you your job. And you got shunned at every turn if you felt that your uttering mouth was the only thing that kept the Earth orbiting the Sun.

People say things to each other today that would have been unthinkable 30, 40 years ago. Bringing shame on your family's reputation was a big, big thing.

I continue to wonder why, when you wax nostalgic about the past, and talk about the more civil "deportment" in days gone by, you neglect to mention things like overt racism, unchecked sexual exploitation, and such. That was such beautiful and civil deportment, wasn't it?

Did you mis-read my words about people not being angels?

Do you view

cameras everywhere

school shootings

gambling casinos

ubiquitous anti-theft packaging

armed police escorting sports coaches

road rage

workplace shootings

drug violence ripping cities asunder

drug use by kids

children committing suicide

explicit sex on cable tv

robbers shooting victims over 25 bucks

kids with who knows how many "parents" due to divorce rates

grandparents all over the nation raising kids

the decline in vocabulary

honor roll status by quota

states running numbers rackets

remedial courses needed for incoming college freshmen

rampant cheating

doping of kids with ritalin and the like

beatings of school teachers

political exploitation of young people

a billion dollar industry in home security systems and dead bolts

huge appetite for foreign goods

then casting blame for job loss

crude language at every turn

huge credit car debt

the decline of the newspapers

chubby youngsters with heart disease and diabetes

people complaining about privacy while happily posting on YouTube, Facebook, etc.

...as progress?

This is just my short list...

No, I saw you sweep horrendous abuses under the rug with that comment. As for the rest of your post, all I can say is, cranky old men have been complaining about the "youth of today" since (and probably before) Socrates:

"The children now love luxury; they have bad manners, contempt for authority; they show disrespect for elders..." Socrates (as attributed by Plato)

"The world is passing through troublous times. The young people of today think of nothing but themselves. They have no reverence for parents or old age. They are impatient of all restraint. They talk as if they knew everything, and what passes for wisdom with us is foolishness with them. As for the girls, they are forward, immodest and unladylike in speech, behavior and dress." Peter the Hermit (1274 AD)

I'm aware of the words of this or that historical Greek.

How about my short list? Progress or no?

And I was around when Maddux, Faubus, Wallace, and the like were living. You, too. I know what side of the fence brought about the Jim Crow laws.

I sweep nothing under the rug.

Some things gained, some things lost.

A melting pot, a salad tossed.

Yet, there are always shimmers of hope. We might not be able to do great things, but we can still do small things in a great way.

A humble sage once, in passing, told me about the philosophy of personal embiggenment.

I knew a bunch of crotchety old fussbags myself. But I don't hold it against them really. If I make it to that age, I'm definitely gonna terrorize some neighborhood kids. But I won't bust on the ones playing football. I wanna concentrate on the candy ass kids whose parents drive them everywhere with the dvd player in the SUV and the kids are obese and stupid and helpless. I wanna make those kids cry. That's gonna be my area of curmudgeonly specialization.

You gotta have goals.

A great-grandchild of Jester's called her a few days ago and begged her to change her ways with the neighborhood children.

"She said 'Grandma, don't you pick nothing up out of your yard,' " Jester said. "She was just so sweet."

:wallbash:

I don't know how I feel about this story, but that's actually a pretty good picture of Al Davis.

:thumbsup::wallbash:

She picked up something in her yard. Why is she required to give it to anybody? You drop $20 and the wind carries it to my feet. Am I required to give you the $20?

And let us not forget the most important fact. Paul Tanis let an 89 year old grandmother beat him in a foot race to the ball. If I was his son I would be too embarassed to go to school.

I thought the exact same thing when I read that. :wallbash:

If a soccer ball lands on your property you have the right to deflate it with a knife.

Them damn kids and their fancy wheels and fires. Back in our time we lugged the stuff ourselves and ate stuff raw. These kids have to have all the new fancy stuff. What's next some kinda newfangled thing to cut meat?

There were a few of these grisly old bats in my neighborhood, growing up in Niagara Falls. I despise them now, almost as much as I did, then.

Same here. Maybe it's a Niagara Falls thing.

I was certain my elderly next-door neighbor was going to die and they were going to find a closet full of our Nerf baseballs, tennis balls, footballs and hockey balls that he snatched up from his back yard.

I've been getting emails all day from siblings and childhood friends about this. The guy across the street Mr. McMinnis (not his real name...he was a decent guy and long dead...but a crab.) Used to complain when we played touch football in the street. One day the ball went into his front yard and he took it. I got all pissed off and took his lawn mower over to my yard. I was stubborn and wouldn't budge and he wouldn't either. It became a huge neighborhood thing and my big brother came back from work and negotitiated with his daughter. It culminated with this big meeting in the middle of the street where he gave us back the football and I gave him back his lawn mower, with a commitment from Mr. M not to tell my parents, who probably would have whooped my ass.
