Mulligans and Laughlins come to mind from a long gone era. Mullgans was owned by two Buffalo cops and Laughlins was a neat hangout.

South Buffalo had the Southside, O'Malley's there was a place named after a car company in west seneca where the early Jim Kelly got into some trouble (Pierce-Arrow?) from time to time (nothing major). the Dash Inn (a neighborhood dive...would be shocked if anyone else remembered it.)

Culberts, the Sandbarand Gadawski's certainly qualify as "gin mills".

Like Cincy, most of my favorite WNY joints are long gone. Some of the best, that come immediately to mind, that were still open the last time I checked, are:

Youngstown:

The Jug!

Lockport:

Niagara Hotel on North Transit (a dump's dump!)

Niagara Falls:

Players on Niagara Street (across from the Seneca Casino (across from

Judi's Lounge on Military Road (across from the Outlet Mall)

Jonfres on Niagara St (and 27th st).

Dueger's Tenowon on Niagara St (1001 Niagara St, actually)

Braggs on Ferry Ave (and 3rd St)

Stadium Grill on Hyde Park Blvd (across from Sal Maglie Stadium)

How could I forget the Jug!!! Guarded at the Fort for two years, got to know the insdide of the Jug pretty well those summers.

Judi"s. Ah yes, pitchers of Kamikazes during lunch break at LaSalle High School!!! ( for you kiddies, we was legal at the time). Lets not forget the Crazy Horse was walkable form the school for lunch as well

Stadium Grill was in plenty of times

Also, on Grand Island was the Beach House. Awesome Sunday afternoon/evenings party scene during the summer

I didn't notice, in the original post, that there was interest in gin mills of the past, too.

Well...

Youngstown:

Commerford's Riverview Inn (I bartended there for a while) and the place across the street from Commerfords, I forget the name.

Niagara Falls:

Pugsies

Daddy Taught Us How (AKA Daddy's. Bartended there, too.)

Old Angelo's

Dell's Inn

Grand Inn

Captain's Cove

Half Time

Ontario House

The Shed

Zodiac Lounge

Elmer's and Susan's Hyde Park Grill

Amato's

Bozek's

Buffalo and surrounding area:

Jack Daniels (great place with great music, as I recall)

the original Tralfamadore

as mentioned, Slomba's

CPG (forgot to mention that earlier)

Rudi's Pump Room

Bradford Grill

the bar at the corner of Grant St and maybe Bradley (no bar there, anymore)

the really bizarre old people cocktail lounge in Kenmore (either on Delaware or Elmwood). it was a very small and oddly shaped building

I spent plenty of time, drunk at the Jug, playing shuffleboard.

I bartended at Commerfords (probably before your time) and the Old Fort Inn. For a couple of summers, I ran the bar at the Youngstown Yacht Club.

Is 'The Library' still there?

Don't think so (it changed names, years ago). but, it certainly wasn't a dive/gin mill. Lot's of Canadians went there. I think crayons used to work there.

We used to Roll the Golf Club when I played Beer League Hockey back in the late 1990's....It is funny there are some places I refuse to go to b/c their team was full of a-holes

I'd left Buffalo by then. My Dad did say he stopped going htere, cause the new owners went too "upscale."
