finknottle
Ok you partisan hack, we both agree that McCain's plan ain't going to work. No how is Obama's Great American Giveaway going to work? Here is the difference between the two failures. McCains experiiment is reversible - you can always reduce military spending and return the tax levels to those of the Clinton era later. Obama's are permanent - once you eliminate income taxes on retiree's, you can't start taxing them again later. Once you put a program in place to guarantee every student their college tuition in exchange for public service make-work jobs, you can't eliminate the program later. Once you put in place a program giving money to the poor or to children, you can't take it away later. Roll-backs of social programs are extremely few and far between. One need look no further than the Department of Education, a federal cabinet-level department whose purpose is obscure at best - education is a local matter. The Republicans made eliminating the department a cause celeb for almost 30 years and Reagan campaigned on the issue, but even he couldn't make a dent. Welfare reform consumed most of the Clinton administrations political capital, and the effort alienated him from the party.

John Adams
Ah, kinda like Capital Gains tax reductions or for that matter any tax reduction including corporate loop holes. No, not like that at all. Taxes are raised and lowered with some regularity. Huge government programs are almost never cut. Shifted around maybe, but never cut. Government isn't set up to shrink. ExiledInIllinois
What do we do as a society when one's success comes at the expense of the gov't and your fellow taxpayers? What do we do with companies that pay their workers depressed wages and then that company sends the worker into the sysytem for benefits like health and other things. "Ya, we will are paying you 8 bucks and hour... But, if you need aid... You can hook up with the welfare system for health and food stamps." IMO, seems we are being punished for the success of some. When ones's success hinges on "race to the bottom", we are all punished in the long run.
