Another year with no pass rush from the front 4....

Another year will go by without a pass rush from our front 4. The only attempt to fix it in the offseason(drafting Ellis in the 3rd round) seems like it will not make an impact this year as not only can't he surpass friggin' Copeland Bryan on the depth chart, he hasn't even dressed for a game.

just can't rely on a front 4 alone to generate pressure unless you have either absolutely extraordinary talent or a blitz game that the line has to respect, and you can fool them a bit. If you vanilla rush 4, the 5 to 6 guys blocking will pick them up nearly every time save the very rare coverage sack.

If you don't blitz, the OL outnumbers the DL 5 to 4, so the majority of NFL teams blitz. The Bills did a nice job with LB and DB blitzes against the Seahawks and Jags.

 

For some crazy reason, they decided to hang back this game. Maybe we'll learn what that reason is this week, but whatever it is, this game plan needs to go into the circular file.

They swing him out wide, which would work great if they had pressure up the middle to flush the QB out of the pocket. They tried some weird stunts today, but they were ineffective. They used Poz to blitz up the middle the first few games, but they dropped him back in coverage the entire game.

 

Mitchell came up the middle today, through the gap caused by Schobel's wide rush, and nailed Warner, but they didn't blitz the LBs enough today.

Wait...Now that Stroud is here, Schobel won't be double teamed any more, at least that is that I read here in the offseason. Either Stroud isn't having an impact in terms of pass rush or Schobel is hitting a brick wall in terms of being a speed rusher on the edge(on trick pony in terms of pass rushing).

PASS RUSH.

 

They had ends. I don't care what anyone says, but Schobel and Kelsay aren't getting it done when it comes to rushing the passer. It's not Stroud or Williams job to rack up huge sack numbers. That job is designed for the ends and both of our guys aren't doing much of that lately.

 

I just don't think that will change unless Schobel wakes up in dramatic fashion.

 

Warner had all day and when he does, he can carve up any defense.

C'mon, the defensive stats coming into this game were pretty good, Fewell just drew up a lousy game plan for whatever reason. It sucks when it happens, but it does.

 

Take a look at the AFC finalists from last season, the Chargers and Pats. Both just got their asses kicked by the Dolphins because they couldn't stop a college option play. It happens in the NFL.

 

Anyone who knows a thing about the C2 realizes the front four must generate a pass rush. We all know that didn't happen, and Buffalo's DL wasn't lining up against Conrad Dobler and Dan Dierdorf.

 

I can't recall a time when Warner was anything more than a little hurried. When a QB completes better than 75% of their passes, something is catastrophically wrong. Today, the weakness of the C2 was demonstrated. Warner didn't complete big passes, but nickel and dimed the defense to death. His average completion was a mere 6 yards per, but was there any doubt he would complete a pass when he dropped back?

 

I though the Bills had better personnel on the DL and in the LB corps. And how many times was it said the secondary was supremely upgraded. McGee's absence hurt, but I'm not sure he's have made much difference.

 

DJ has never selected quality coordinators. Never, not on offense, not on defense. Unless PF comes up with something for SD, and he's got 2 weeks, he's probably living up to Jauron's track record.

It's time to get rid of Schoebel & Denney. Hopefully, we can trade Schoebel, and cut Denney. Our pass rush has been a problem for a few years now, and this game really exposed it.

I agree with you and would argue that the Bills look their best when they're not playing a straight C2 or Tampa 2 defense.

 

The defense looked its best against the Jags and the Seahawks, and they made their biggest plays when they were playing more of a zone-blitz scheme than a cover 2.
