Credit Card Theft

So, BJ's gets hacked and someone steals my CC#. Spends about $800 and then the CC Company refuses purchases until I approve. I call the CC Company to inform of the issue and they remove the charges, close the card, and issue another one. First set of questions, what does the CC Company do next? Do they go after the thief?

I decided to do my own investigation and found out where the purchases were made and contacted each company and asked them to send me the purchase order. Through that information, I found out that the thief is from Indonesia and I now know his name, address, email, blackberry carrier (because the idiot was stupid enough to return an email I sent anonymously), and even found his myspace page. I know what the c@cks---ker looks like. So, is there anything I can do? Will authorities go after anyone in Indofreakinnesia for a crime of less than $1000? I really want to nail this b@stard!!! Please advise, of course the usual TBD jokes are welcome as long as they are indeed funny....

Honestly, I think you would have had a LOT more luck, if this bozo weren't international. I just don't see any justice coming your way on this one since it would require cooperation from Indonesian authorities.

If you know his address, look up some of indonesia's laws about pornographic materials. Then, for a low fee to yourself, send him some twisted ass subscription of something like "naked midgets and barnyard friends" and inform local authorities.

If BJ's security measures were sub-standard, they should be responsible for any losses you sustain. Class action, anyone?

IBM was hacked a while back and employee info was stolen -- they offered free credit monitoring for a year or something like that.

Work up a form letter and relate your story to FBI, TSA, the credit reporting businesses here in the States, the airlines, the car rental companies - domestic and international, the hotel chains, your State's AG office, the Indian government, and Interpol. Mail hard copy - the volume of email for many folks in the public and private sector is so burdensome, you will likely get zapped away as low priority by the receivers in their attempt to maintain some level of sanity.

Wow - that's pretty cool you actually tracked the guy down. I had my # stolen a couple years ago - reported it and a local cop came to my house. I'm telling him I know the purchase/online company that likely ripped it off - and he just looks at me and says straight out "Well, we never really actually solve any of these so I wouldn't get any hopes up". It was then that I came back to reality and realized the capabilities of the local cops weren't exactly "as seen on TV"

My father works for a bank doing software development for fraud detection. They always turn over all fraud evidence to the police, but the police don't give a damn. They don't bother to do anything with it.

Your father's wasting his time. He should just buy the software from Fair Isaac. Or go work for them. They do that, only better.

A couple years ago BJ's got hacked and we received a letter from GM (Our CC company at the time) stating that BJ's was hacked and our cc number was potentially compromised. They said they were cancelling the card and issuing a new number. This time we heard about the BJ's hack and didn't receive anything from our current cc company, Chase. So, I guess I will be paying cash from now on at BJ's.

what's the myspace link? How old is the guy?

Here's the myspace link. It's actually his band site, he's the drummer. I found it by googling his email address, ADISYOUKAT@YAHOO.COM, which I got off the orders he placed. I created a bogus yahoo account and sent him the following:

So Ari, I see you stole my credit card number and made some purchases B word. Well, I am hot on your trail. Nice picture of the band by the way, are you all in on federal crimes? Just wondering if only you or the whole band will be playing the skin flute in prison.

Like an idiot he replies with "B word" from his blackberry, so now I know who his cell provider is and probably can hunt down his number.

I hear traveling to Indonesia is pretty cheap. Just take a vacation there, find him and ask for your $800 back.
