Bush was at least smart enough to orchestrate the 9-11 attack in the middle of the day so he didn't have to be roused out of his sleep. Do they feel dissed by Obama or that they can now relate more to McCain? I happen to think that not knowing how the damn things work, and not understanding the basic idea of them, is a serious issue when it is the greatest cultural advance in the last millennium. I really do. I know he knows what the Internet is, but still, if you do not understand or care to understand how the damn thing works I really think it hinders a lot of basic understanding of technology. Again, I am sick of stupid people in the White House. If that makes me an elitist, I'm happy to be an elitist. I really don't understand this emphasis on "I'll vote for the guy/gal who'd I rather have a beer with" and the current McCain/Palin strategy of disparaging Obama's law degree from Harvard. God forbid we actually have someone intelligent in the White House. I want someone in there who has a grasp of current technology and can actually have a dialog about the life sciences without smirking and hamming it up for yuks. We've had eight years of ignorance and outright disdain for science, technology and intelligence. We've had eight years of a Bush Administration burying science that didn't support their views or policy. This country is being left in the dust by other nations who actually give a damn about education and technology--countries that put an emphasis on intelligence. A vote for McCain and Palin is a vote to continue on the same backward track, where banning books and teaching creationism will be the norm rather than the exception. I don't really think so. His policy makers and advisors on technology better damn well understand it, I agree there, but I'm not sure its a requirement to be POTUS. Sure, he doesn't need to know how to write code, perform a heart transplant, clone a sheep or build a particle accelerator in his back yard (that would be freaking awesome, but Buckaroo Banzai's not running in this election), but he damn well better be able to have an intelligent, informed discussion on his own. Sure, you can get away with not knowing. Sure you can have advisors explain how 10 billion and 12 billion are 22 billion and 22 billion is a lot. But it really helps the understanding of a lot of other things when you know math. Technology is completely changing the world, practically on a daily basis. Knowing how it works is a major cog in understanding the global marketplace. Knowing how people communicate with each other is a big step. My business partner is older and doesn't bother to understand a lot of the technology. He knows more than McCain, and can get his own email, but there have been dozens of conversations I have had with him over the last few years where his basic ignorance of technology didn't allow him to even join the conversation, he didn't know how it affected how our own business is changing, he was just left behind and completely ignorant on an entire new phase and market in the business he used to know inside out. I think it's a big thing, yes. Again, I'm sure McCain knows a bit about the Internet. But to me, again like math, it's like not understanding the basic tenets of addition and subtraction and multiplication and division, but being able to get a number by using a calculator.
