PastaJoe
My colleague, whose father was an NHL player and owns a number of rinks (she was a figure skater) just explained to me what it means to play hockey in these kids' leagues up in the great white north. It is NOT cheap. So it's not available to everyone - mostly just the "haves". Oh and they're Canadian by the way, they don't give a rip about US politics. They were just commenting to me that making the claim "hockey mom" doesn't mean exactly what it implies. It's actually somewhat of a boast in terms of "I got the bucks to do it" from their perspective. I personally wouldn't know. I don't like hockey. I've been coaching youth hockey for 10 years and my son plays. The registration fee for 1 player at the midget travel level this year is $700. That basically pays for the ice time. Jerseys, any new equipment, required raffle sales, tournaments, and gas to get to games which could be as far as Ottawa or Boston are all extra. House level which usually stays within 100 miles costs about $500. There are elite level youth teams, like the Syracuse Stars, which cost up to $5000 to play, and they travel as far as Chicago. Who ever would have thought a sport like hockey was elitist. I never did, but I've learned. Chalk one up for Sarah Palin - I owe her a debt of gratitude because without her I'd just have thought you plunk down $150 for some skates and a stick and then pound the sh-- of each other on the Erie Canal in January.
