jester43 Posted October 21, 2004 Posted October 21, 2004 some of you seem to be very knowledgable baseball fans, so can anyone explain: 1. WHY did francona bench the starter (whasisname...lowe?)after 69 pitches when he was still throwing really really well, in favor of a guy who had just thrown 100 pitches 2 days prior? i mean, i know he's PEDRO and all...but jeez... 2. and then...WHY did he yank pedro after he finally seemed to be warmed up and effective? seems like francona's ring was puckered a little too tight if you ask me...or maybe there's an explanation?

Lowe has surprised everybody pitching that well for so long last night! the plan was to try to have 3-4 good innings from him then to give maybe the ball to Wakefield or Arroyo... now why has Francona called Pedro to pitch for the 7th? he probably thought he was the best available arm and in a 7th game that's what you should do but it backfired a little... anyway it was obvious it was just for an inning max as we need Pedro as soon as sunday night...
OnTheRocks Posted October 21, 2004 Posted October 21, 2004 or maybe there's an explanation? 78727 nope. he is just a bad manager. oh wait...that is an explaination.

So he SAT (not benched) a pitcher who was on short rest (3 days) for a guy who was on SHORTER rest (2 days)? Makes no sense.
Greg de'Ville Posted October 21, 2004 Posted October 21, 2004 ...that was a Grady Little moment by Tito. What was he thinking? Lowe had thrown only 69 pitches through 6 and was sharp as a tack. I'da left him in there. Was amazing the Sox won given that Tito could not manage his way out of a paper bag in four years in Philly.
gmac17 Posted October 21, 2004 Posted October 21, 2004 besides that, tito managed this series very well.
Pete Posted October 21, 2004 Posted October 21, 2004 I thought it was to rub it in Yanks fans face a little and to let Pedro go out a winner at Yankee Stadium. The move made no sense to me. I think it was to say "your not our Daddy".

The Babe knew that Pedro would give up a hit or two and get the crowd back into it. The plan was to then freeze Francona into leaving Petey in there as the game snowballed into a total BoSox collapse. After all, it worked to pefection when he had taken over Grady's body last year and froze him into indecision as Pedro blows the lead. Fortunately, Pedro got things under control and the Babe was forced to leave Francona's body because a ghost can only occupy a body for about an inning or so.
The Poojer Posted October 21, 2004 Posted October 21, 2004 That may be exactly that. with a 6-7 run lead, I am sure Pedro wanted to come in and kind of stick it to the NY crowd, not exactly a smart move by francona if that is the case, but an awfully ballsy move by both pedro and francona. Then again maybe it was just an audition for Pedro to see how Yankee Stadium is gonna feel next year when he is in pinstripes. I thought it was to rub it in Yanks fans face a little and to let Pedro go out a winner at Yankee Stadium. The move made no sense to me. I think it was to say "your not our Daddy". 78977
Thurman's Helmet Posted October 21, 2004 Posted October 21, 2004 Lowe was done after 69 pitches. He pitched a few days ago and they didnt want to burn him out. He brought Pedro in for just one inning to help save some of the other bullpen arms and he had a 7 run lead. Pedro wasnt loose to start off but finished the inning strong. Say what you want about Francona, he managed Games 4-7 brilliantly. Now our entire pitching staff will be rested and ready to go in the World Series.
bobblehead Posted October 21, 2004 Posted October 21, 2004 Pedro was throwing some heat, old-time Pedro 97 mph kind of heat. I'm guessing that Francona knew Pedro was going to be able to do this (maybe from pre-game warmups, or maybe Pedro telling him this?), and that since his Wakefield plan was scrapped to to Lowe's effectiveness, why not use Pedro? Since he could, if things started to go south, get Embree in there in order to get the Sox to Timlin in the 8th.
