But for the most part, the announcers keep us well informed at what to expect in the routine. Last night though, the announcers were both shocked at the score given to the Russian.

With the actual score on the scoreboard. The breaks in the routine are generally what kill start values. I have a lot of experience with this, and coaches/fans/parents go nuts when it happens, but the breaks get an autodeuction of .3 and then the skills series may be dropped a level or two. In effect the gymnast is it seems double penalized, but that's how the scoring system works. The coaches know it, but they tend to plead stupid and like to complain. If they B word too much that can have their credentials pulled by USAG/FIG and they couldn't even coach recreation children if that happens.
