Another possibility is setting up a wireless network. To do that, you'll need something like this.

Just don't let fezmid hear you recommending wireless, he might have a seizure.
/dev/null Posted October 20, 2004 Posted October 20, 2004 Yes you can get a switch or a router. 78219 make sure you buy one with a firewall to keep intruders out, and if you go wireless make sure you read up on wireless security to keep neighbors and hackers from using your network

And yes - Wireless networking - my professional opinion is "Just say no!" You'll need a router regardless (you can't have two cable modems). All routers use NAT, which is in effect a firewall (sorta). CW

Fezmid Posted October 20, 2004 Posted October 20, 2004 Are you twitching on the floor? 78238 Naw. I figure all of the insecure people out there will help me -- as the saying (that I think I invented, but may have just picked it up somewhere along the line), "You don't have to have the most secure PC on the 'net, you just need to be more secure than your neighbor." Given the fact that, from my livingroom, I can easily break into five (5!) of my neighbor's wireless networks if I want, I think I'm safe... CW

HtownBillsFan Posted October 21, 2004 Posted October 21, 2004 why cant u have two cable modems hooked on the same line?
cåblelady Posted October 21, 2004 Posted October 21, 2004 why cant u have two cable modems hooked on the same line? 78304 You can.....if you want to pay double for your *RR* bill. I have a new digital phone/*RR* modem. It's cool. No more long distance toll charges for me !!!
Alaska Darin Posted October 21, 2004 Posted October 21, 2004 why cant u have two cable modems hooked on the same line? 78304 No reason to do that. A small hub or switch is much easier and cheaper.
/dev/null Posted October 21, 2004 Posted October 21, 2004 This is what you need 78315 an excellent recommendation. i use the 8 port model
Frez Posted October 21, 2004 Posted October 21, 2004 an excellent recommendation. i use the 8 port model 78348 [/quote Why 8 ports? You actually need all of them i take it?
Dennis in NC Posted October 21, 2004 Posted October 21, 2004 As far as routers, I would recommend against the SMC Barricade (needed frequent reboot), and for the Netgear WGT624, which I have only had for a month or so, but works much better than the SMC.
HtownBillsFan Posted October 21, 2004 Posted October 21, 2004 the reason I ask about 2 modems is that a friend of mine has 2 and only one works when hooked up. I was wondering why only one works
/dev/null Posted October 21, 2004 Posted October 21, 2004 Why 8 ports? You actually need all of them i take it? 78358 lets see, right now i have plugged in: winxp desktop winxp laptop linux win2k ps2 i'll be hooking up another linux box when ups delivers the case and pvr card (setting a homemade tivo B)) so thats 6 got some old junkers i have sitting around i plug in every once in awhile friends/relatives sometimes plug laptops in when visiting
Frez Posted October 21, 2004 Posted October 21, 2004 This is what I use and it works great for me. My router
