PastaJoe Posted August 20, 2008 Posted August 20, 2008 http://fe46.news.sp1.yahoo.com/s/ap/200808...t7GYtSao0pxFb8C Will he face a Dixie Chick-like backlash from country music fans? Are there any non-country singers under 40 supporting McCain?
KD in CA Posted August 20, 2008 Posted August 20, 2008 Wow, that's big news. Who's Brittney supporting?
Gavin in Va Beach Posted August 20, 2008 Posted August 20, 2008 Wow, that's big news. Who's Brittney supporting? Kevin Federline
In-A-Gadda-Levitre Posted August 20, 2008 Posted August 20, 2008 wasn't Toby Keith recently talking trash to Glen Beck about Obama not being black enough?
/dev/null Posted August 20, 2008 Posted August 20, 2008 Kevin Federline Seriously, who is Toby Keith? I'm not a country music fan, so I don't know if he's a big name act or some one hit wonder Oh, and why should we care what candidate a musician or actor supports?
PastaJoe Posted August 20, 2008 Author Posted August 20, 2008 Seriously, who is Toby Keith? I'm not a country music fan, so I don't know if he's a big name act or some one hit wonder Oh, and why should we care what candidate a musician or actor supports? He's a major country star. Five of his albums have reached number one on the Billboard Top Country Albums chart, and he has had sixteen Number One singles on the Billboard Hot Country Songs charts. And we shouldn't care about who any celebrity supports, but the rednecks tend to turn on their own when they don't follow their groupthink, and it will be interesting to see how they treat him.
buckeyemike Posted August 20, 2008 Posted August 20, 2008 Toby Keith's politics have always been a bit more complicated than his fans may think. He's even admitted this. He once called himself a conservative Democrat who felt ashamed for his party.

You mean just like Hollywood does when one of their own doesn't follow the far left whack-job script?

I"m not a country music fan, but there's a difference between a country music star supporting a democratic candidate, and saying that the POTUS is an embarrassment and a stupid !@#$. Country music fans won't be as outraged by Keith supporting Obama as a presidential candidate. Country music fans were outraged by the Dixie Chicks calling President Bush an embarrassment to the country and a stupid !@#$, especially during a time of war. In fact, many country music fans are democrats, but somehow they are also able to support the country they live in no matter which party is president. They also take offense to people insulting their country, especially people who choose to do it in public with a large audience listening instead of an appropriate forum. But I'm sure you're right, it was just all about "groupthink" for them, and not at all about decency and respect for the leader of your country. Can you grasp the difference in the two situations? Doubtful. Very Doubtful.
JK2000 Posted August 20, 2008 Posted August 20, 2008 You mean just like Hollywood does when one of their own doesn't follow the far left whack-job script? Exactly, those Hollywood socialist pinkos should be ashamed of the way the've blacklisted Arnold Schwarzenegger, Bruce Willis, Clint Eastwood, Jerry Bruckheimer, Sylvester Stallone, and Kelsey Grammer.
finknottle Posted August 20, 2008 Posted August 20, 2008 Exactly, those Hollywood socialist pinkos should be ashamed of the way the've blacklisted Arnold Schwarzenegger, ... Is he on the list because he married into the Kennedy clan?
Cheeseburger_in_paradise Posted August 21, 2008 Posted August 21, 2008 wasn't Toby Keith recently talking trash to Glen Beck about Obama not being black enough? I saw that. He is a life long Democrat. Beck asked him who he was going to vote for, but he said he had not decided, or he wouldn't say. It's a real stretch for AP to say Toby Keith supports Obama. Ah The Press.....I'd say it's a better chance he will vote for Obama than him ever becoming friends with the Dixie Chicks.

Dan Posted August 21, 2008 Posted August 21, 2008 Weren't they also overseas at the time? Yes. They were playing a show in England at the time. However they said nothing at all about.... "President Bush [being] an embarrassment to the country and a stupid !@#$". Actually, all they said was... "they were embarrassed that Bush was from Texas". Of course, it got completely blown out of proportion, but why worry ourselves with the facts. I believe the interest of Toby Keith supporting Obama is that at the time he and the Dixie Chicks got into a war of words... they obviously against the war; Toby for it. Of course, once again facts got obscured and now most people think Toby Keith is a staunch supporter of Bush and the Republicans, when in reality he's openly said he disagrees with much of Bush's policies. He did, however, do a much better job of playing up the redneck crowd with lines like... "We'll put a boot up your ass. It's the American way."
yall Posted August 21, 2008 Posted August 21, 2008 He did, however, do a much better job of playing up the redneck crowd with lines like... "We'll put a boot up your ass. It's the American way." Wasn't that line from a song about Afghanistan, not Iraq? If so, I'd say that's playing up just about everyone in the US (minus Ted Rall).

He did, however, do a much better job of playing up the redneck crowd with lines like... "We'll put a boot up your ass. It's the American way." Well, unfortunately I saw a good portion of the Dixie Chick documentary late one night when I was unable to sleep. They actually said a lot more about Bush in that crappy documentary than what I stated above. Perhaps in the first incident you are right about that being all they said, I didn't see the first 1/2 hour or so. But their biggest problem was that they didn't know when to shut up. They kept saying more and more stuff after that first incident that just got more and more people upset. I (and I'm sure many other people) saw them say Bush was an embarrassment (not just to Texas) and that he was a stupid !@#$, among several other things. Then the funny part was they couldn't understand why their concert sales were down, and they were playing in Canada instead of their usual places. They did a fine job of playing the rebel who was standing up to the man, but they couldn't understand that along with that role there were consequences. It actually forced them to completely change their style of music into a more pop contemporary than country (as if they weren't pop enough already). Toby Keith got upset with them when they bitched about his boot in the ass song. Again, their problem was not knowing when to shut up. But as I said before, it's completely different than Keith supporting Obama, unfortunately Pasta Joe won't be able to figure out why.
