GG
Invite the NATO leaders to Washington, or go over there and meet with them, collectively make an attempt to show solidarity and come to some agreement. Throw them out of the G8. Isolate them economically using whatever means you have. Send 5,000 multinational troops to Georgia as peacekeepers. Take away the 2014 Olympics. Go sit down with Putin. Oops, that would be diplomacy, and we can't be doing that now, can we? That's a lot of action to accomplish in one week and in order to do that, US would need to bull rush other NATO members into acquiescence, because predictably old Europe is getting cold feet. Yet, I could have sworn that you're concerned about US's bullying image. So which USA do you want, the diplomat or the bully? Or, do you just like to complain? I didn't realize there was a timetable here. I want them the USA to act like a leader. There's a time for diplomacy and there's also a time for a show of strength. This situation probably calls for a careful portion of both. Nobody said it was easy. I don't like to complain, but it's worth standing up and questioning blind support for a president's actions when the rest of the world sees him as a joke. So if your answer is not limited to last week's time frame, then what is wrong with USA's current reaction to the crisis? If the rest of the world (including you) sees him as a joke, why all the hand wringing that he's not doing his job? Surely, the real world leaders should be able to step right up? Wasn't the world supposed to have decoupled from US influence by now? At least that's what Russia is betting on.

Oops, that would be diplomacy, and we can't be doing that now, can we? Yes, I'm sure Putin would welcome a sit down right after Bush finishes condemning him publicly, evicting him from the G8 (unilaterally I guess), and setting an economic boycott. btw...when was Bush named head of the IOC? You don't really have any understanding of the word 'diplomacy', do you? JK must be thrilled to know he has an intellectual equal on the board. Chilly
I'm not a politician, or a diplomat, nor do I have a background in foreign policy. But I can read, and the American president was ridiculed worldwide for his choices and responses. Who was doing the ridiculing? Do they have a background in foreign policy and diplomacy? May be he was busying working on the Georgia situation during the day and had a briefing lined up at teh embassy after the ceremonies? What the F do you think he does? Maybe he goes to Russia with a few carrots and sticks, foolish me thinking you might be able to see that... Bush isn't head of the IOC, but invading a country during the current Olympics just might garner support from other IOC countries. Will it work? Who knows, it's just an option. KD in CA
just keep on hating, it's what you do best Well, you didn't bother to provide a sensible response to any of the posts pointing out your misconception about a POTUS taking "vacation", or the ones pointing out that provoking Russia wouldn't be a very smart idea, or the ones pointing out that you are contradicting yourself calling for severe repercussions and 'diplomacy' at the same time, so I'm not too sure what you expect at this point. The only 'hating' here seems to be your pathological obsession with everything and anything done by Bush.
JK2000
The cease-fire is a crisis? So it was okay that he was out of the country for the actual war...but now that the shooting's stopped and the Russians are withdrawing (albiet slowly) and he's in the country, he's irresponsible? Withdrawing? Then why are the Russians building trenches and sentry posts deep inside Georgia? Why don't you take your idiocy a step further and posit that the Russians invaded Georgia because they new Bush would be on vacation in August and not do anything about it? Because foreign policy grinds obviously to a complete halt when the president is out of the White House. Do you really think that it's a coincidence that America's worst president (Even worse than Carter!) since Herbert Hoover is also the all time leader in presidential vacation days? JK2000
....which don't exist. You've finally convinced me. Bush should take as much vacation as he wants. He's clearly just as engaged in domestic and foreign affairs while clearing brush in Crawford as he is when he's in the capital of the world's lone superpower. Considering how great of a job he's been doing I think he's actually taking too little vacation, he's certainly deserves more.

He's on call every single day of the year, 24 hours a day. That's what being President is. And, yes, he can be equally in charge of the world's lone superpower from his house or from the White House. It's 2008. Go ahead and keep hammering this point. It's silly and pointless, and naturally provides a nice reminder of how well you understand the real world. Right, thank you for clarifying that you think that the President of the United States only has a "fax machine and a cell phone" at his disposal when he's not in Washington, D.C. Congratulations on your spectacular ignorance. That hole you're in? Keep digging, you'll be out in no time.
