ExiledInIllinois
You are obligated to report and pay those taxes. Unlike a point of purchase sale, the onus of paying those taxes is on you. So I'm sure you meant that you regularly pay sales taxes on mail order items, just not at the time of purchase. Back of the IL tax return form would have a use tax form that you were supposed to fill out the difference on items bought in different taxed areas... Right across the border in Indiana, the sales tax is lower. Hey Parnelli, guess how that idea went over?
ExiledInIllinois
Be thankful we don't live in the older days... Years gone by. In Indiana, the tax man would walk down the street... Going to each house and would assess what kind of luxuries one had and then tax one accordingly. Some folks are born, silver spoon in hand, Lord, don't they help themselves, yoh? But when the taxman comes to the door, Lord, the house looks like a rummage sale, yeah. I think I know just the guy that would be working as the "tax man": John Adams... Oh ya, he'd have the RIAA in his pocket also.
