Dan Gross Posted October 20, 2004 Posted October 20, 2004 Yardage is a tough measure to go by. Which do you think would hurt a team worse: a single pass interference call for 45 yards or 8 false starts?
stevestojan Posted October 20, 2004 Posted October 20, 2004 Yardage is a tough measure to go by. That's not an answerable question without seeing a game like that.
Rico Posted October 20, 2004 Posted October 20, 2004 I'm surprised to see the Pats 12th from the bottom.
Berni Posted October 20, 2004 Author Posted October 20, 2004 Yardage is a tough measure to go by. Nevertheless, some interesting insights are possible. For example, the Jets are number one; obviously, their special penalty training pays off.
eSJayDee Posted October 20, 2004 Posted October 20, 2004 Are those #s right? They look awefully high. Is it possible that they're for penalty assessed both against & for a team? (The #s are roughly double.) I thought if you're really bad you'd accumulate like 1000 yds in penalties a year (i.e. 63 per game).
nodnarb Posted October 20, 2004 Posted October 20, 2004 i take little meaning from those numbers. parcells is known for having disciplined teams and the difference between their numbers and ours is statistically insignificant. carolina is at the bottom even though they were one of the most disciplined teams in the league and fox was credited almost weekly for running such a tight, smart ship. you can't overreact to numbers and try to extract meaning from them, especially at this point in the season. the bills will get better, other teams will get worse, there will be losers at the top in that category, and playoff teams near the bottom.

For example, http://www.nfl.com/stats/teamsort/NFL/OFF-...=14&_1:col_2=14 contains the penalty yards of the offense.
