OK - I just can't help it. A country with only 21.5 million people can be sitting 3rd in the Beijing medal count, 10th in the history of the modern summer olympics and 12th overall (including winter olympics).

That is absolutely fricken' amazing!!!!

And another little known fact...Australia is the USAs most loyal ally. Having joined them in every war and conflict since the late 19th century.

Just had to keep you all updated on your "Aussie" education. And the Capital is Canberra, not Sydney.

That is pretty impressive. What did they win their medals in?

Which is in the ACT, and I really freaking like Victoria Bitter. Though, I blame the Aussies for teaching me to say 'car park' as opposed to 'parking lot.'

Where are you from over there, Aussie? I spent a while in Victoria about 10 years back... I almost just stayed for good, quite seriously.

i just spent a week in canada, and the entire country was in cardiac arrest because they hadn't won a medal until today.

luckily, they have an excellent womens wrestling team who grabbed them a gold and something else.

I love Australia. What a great country with great people.

BTW, Aussie...I knew the capital of Australia was Canberra. It was modeled after Washington, DC.

Yea...

how about those Kiwi athletes yesterday?

5 medals in one day. (Most medals in one day in NZ Olympic history.)

Not bad for a country of only 4 million, eh?

Oh yeah... and the Kiwis were smart enough to not believe the WMD hype about Iraq.

(how's that little venture turning out?)

Go All Blacks!

Wow, that was a pointless addition to this thread.

Australia is one of the countries I have wanted to visit but flight to Hong Kong is long enough. Perhaps before I retire after my daughter has moved out.

A lot of people say that.

I was born in Dubbo - spent most of the early years way out west (almost the Outback). Moved to Sydney as a teen. But also spent a few years in Melbourne. My younger brother lives in Melbourne and surprisingly, he's a Bills Fan. I didn't know it for years. He started to take an interest during the Super Bowl years. Typical Aussie - roots for the underdogs.

Oh, just get off of your high-horse there Buford.

I was simply replying to the comment that she made about Oz being the US' best ally. (I actually thought that that was out of place, in an Olympics thread.)

In case you didn't know... we Kiwis and the Aussies love to rip on each other. No harm.

Only when we can be bothered lowering ourselves to their level.

My visa was one of those fancy electronic "ETA" ones, where I couldn't hold a job. The folks I had stayed with had one all lined up for me and whatnot. I still talk to friends over there, probably weekly. I spent two months in Croydon/Lilydale/Kilsyth, which are Melbourne suburbs. Right off of the Maroondah Hwy (if any of this rings a bell?)...

I did all of the touristy things in the first week (Surfing @ Bells Beach, Pygmy Penguins, Casinos...) and spent the the rest of the time just "living" there. I put down a few thousand VB's while there as well. Morning truly is hang-over time to the Aussies!

Once the kids get a bit older, I'm really hoping to stick them on a 747 and head on out there again.

Edit... the one thing I really remember vividly... the people I stayed with owned horses. I had just gotten off of the plane (quite literally) and we had to stop and feed the horses on the way to drop off luggage and whatnot. I had been in the country for perhaps 45 minutes. I had one of the horses on a run when I looked up and noticed ~20 kangaroos making their way across a field at the end of the pasture. I juts remember thinking "holy crap, they're freaking REAL" for about a day after seeing that. If I remember right, that horse property backed up to the Yarra river.
