McKelvin reports?

Recommended Posts

Just read the camp review from yesterday on buffalobills.com, and it said that corner was taking first team nickle reps, with james watching from the sideline. Anyone know what McKelvin is doin in camp?

PS. Not a freak out post just curious what kind of role they have him working in

stop freaking out

Well, if McKelvin is being set up to take over a starter's role, its more effective to have him on the second team outside CB spot, instead of the slot nickel spot. You want him to learn the position he's going to be spending most of his time playing. As for corner, he's going to be coming off the bench in possibly nickel, or most likely dime situations, where he's going to be required to cover a slot WR.

I agree that they need to practice him there, i was just curious because i think initial reports were that he would most likely be the starting nickle back at least for the start of the season

Not necessarily.

The Bills used Antoine Winfield on the outside @ times, but also used him inside on the slot receiver in certain nickle/dime packages. Versatility is the key, and McKelvin seems to have good versatility, so he may be used inside and outside.

With Winfield, they liked him in the slot because he was so physical and good against the run too. I've heard that McKelvin is pretty physical too.

Setting up a player to take on a starters role, isn't that what we try to accomplish with all players? It seems like rookie CB's would be groomed to take on duties in all phases.

I hear you though, chances are Mckelvin will start out the season spelling Mcgee or Greer and one day replace one of them as the starter.

Thanks. Is it possible that they simply dont want to overload him with too many assignments this early on? Perhaps keep him on the outside now, and if need be, you can move greer inside to the slot in the nickel package (where he's done a very good job), and then put McKelvin on the outside.

It's a legitimate option, especially considering that Greer is at his best when attacking the type of short area routes you typically see from a slot receiver. The only downside is the danger of leaving an inexperienced kid with edge responsibility for WR's he's never seen before, particularly if you're planning on doing it during the most critical downs in a game.

If the Bills are wary of this they may try to work Will James into their nickel package and let McKelvin get his toes wet in a limited role in the dime packages. This might be their most sensible option, at least for this year.

Mckelvin does need to be handled with care so lets not put to much on the kids plate at one time.

Some of you guys pack a wealth of knowledge about the game of football, thanks for sharing your insight with some of us less educated folk
