/dev/null Posted July 10, 2008 Posted July 10, 2008 http://blogs.chron.com/sciguy/archives/200...ack_hole_a.html Commissioner Kenneth Mayfield, who is white, said it seemed that central collections "has become a black hole" because paperwork reportedly has become lost in the office. Commissioner John Wiley Price, who is black, interrupted him with a loud "Excuse me!" He then corrected his colleague, saying the office has become a "white hole." So a white person refering to a well known astronomical occurence can be offensive because of the word black and whitey should have to apologize. However a black person responding with an intentional racial response needs no apology? *note that white holes are also astronomical occurences, but are far less known so I doubt a cimpil servent of any race would know of them http://www.ajc.com/metro/content/metro/atl...ns_atlanta.html Public Works officials are replacing 50 "Men Working" with signs that say "Workers Ahead." It will cost $22 to cover over some of the old signs and $144 to buy new signs, said Public Works spokeswoman Valerie Bell-Smith said. Oh well, only $20-144 to replace or cover the offensive signs.

I saw those signs as I was driving down 85, and there was not a chick in any of those crews.
finknottle Posted July 10, 2008 Posted July 10, 2008 About a decade ago a white DC aid had to resign for describing the funding appropriations as 'niggardly.' http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-srv/local.../district27.htm
Chilly Posted July 10, 2008 Posted July 10, 2008 lol, there's a follow-up story to the "Black Hole" nonsense: John would have preferred "Sinkhole"
justnzane Posted July 10, 2008 Posted July 10, 2008 lol, there's a follow-up story to the "Black Hole" nonsense: John would have preferred "Sinkhole" I was reading through the comments on that article, and my fave is: "someone needs to explain to JWP that there is a difference between a black hole and a black a--hole"
GG Posted July 10, 2008 Posted July 10, 2008 lol, there's a follow-up story to the "Black Hole" nonsense: John would have preferred "Sinkhole" It appears to me that Mr. Price objection to the black hole term was not on racial grounds...
Chilly Posted July 10, 2008 Posted July 10, 2008 It appears to me that Mr. Price objection to the black hole term was not on racial grounds... Quite the picture, no?
/dev/null Posted July 10, 2008 Author Posted July 10, 2008 It appears to me that Mr. Price objection to the black hole term was not on racial grounds... I could see your point if instead of saying black hole somebody had said brown eye

So are you IT guys all banned from using the terms 'master' and 'slave' to describe the servers?
Chilly Posted July 10, 2008 Posted July 10, 2008 So are you IT guys all banned from using the terms 'master' and 'slave' to describe the servers? Nope, but it causes us all mental issues.
/dev/null Posted July 10, 2008 Author Posted July 10, 2008 So are you IT guys all banned from using the terms 'master' and 'slave' to describe the servers? Los Angeles tried to have them banned a couple years ago http://www.cnn.com/2003/TECH/ptech/11/26/master.term.reut/
/dev/null Posted July 10, 2008 Author Posted July 10, 2008 lol, there's a follow-up story to the "Black Hole" nonsense: John would have preferred "Sinkhole" I love his line: I said it immediately: 'Why not a white hole?' Because a black hole sucks matter in and a white hole ejects matter out, and thus would make absolutely no sense in describing an office where documents are lost
Wacka Posted July 10, 2008 Posted July 10, 2008 The idiot should talk to Neil deGrasse Tyson , the Director of the Hayden Planetarium in NYC. He is also on NOVA on PBS (saw him yesterday) and happens to be black. His recent book is titled "Death by Black Hole". Maybe the councilman thought he said "Black Ho's"?

DC Tom Posted July 11, 2008 Posted July 11, 2008 Los Angeles tried to have them banned a couple years ago http://www.cnn.com/2003/TECH/ptech/11/26/master.term.reut/ I distinctly remember that. Ever since then, I've made it a point to refer to them as "plantation owner" and "cotton picker" drives...

finknottle Posted July 11, 2008 Posted July 11, 2008 Well, the etymology of that one makes it suspect. I understand it traces back at least to Old Norse in Sweden, circa 1300, related to hneggr meaning stingy. There is an interesting wikipedia entry on other niggardly controversies: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Niggardly
