Wade Phillips already on the way out in Dallas

Recommended Posts

I may be in the minority, but, in my view, the biggest mistake the Bills have made (other than firing Bill Polian) was firing Wade.

You guys were probably the same guys who complained that he did not wear a headset.

I don't think that Wade will ever be an elite head coach, but I would take him in a second over Jauron.

If I owned an NFL Team, I would probably offer Jauron a job as a defensive back assistant, and give him zero authority in the draft.

No doubt Wade Philips will be out as head coach in Dallas in 1-2 years. No one can deny he is a good defensive coordinator but lacks leadership and sideline demeanor to be a good head coach. Believe me, his success in Dallas is because he inherited Parcells' team. Who do you think Jerry "facelift" Jones will bring in?

Jerry "facelift Jones", meet

Bill "the chin" Cower.

Phillips is an awful head coach. He's onnly suceeded using the previous coach's players. Here he had Marv's guys, and in Dallas he had Parcells. And now that Jerry Jones seems intent on bringing in as many wackos as possible, it's only going to make things worse with Wade's easy going demeanor.

God it feels good to be back!

Yes, he had a lot of Marv's players. Yet you cannot deny how helpful he was to the Bills. If it had'nt been for Wade the Bills would never have gotten Ted Washington.

I hope this is sarcasm. It's now become pretty evident that it was Ralph who made the decision to go with RJ over Flutie.

As for Wade being in the hot seat in Dallas because of Garrett looking over his shoulder, note that it was the Cowboys' OFFENSE that melted down at the end of last season and cost them in the playoffs.

Ole Cotton just heard an interview on TV not too long ago where Wade was addressing RJ/Flutie. I think it was on an ESPN top 10 QB Controversies of all time thing or something. RJ/Flutie made the list and Wade was weighing in on it and you could tell he was still pissed about it. In talking abuot the Tenn. game, he flat out said, "Had Flutie been left in as starter... he probably finds a way to win that game, and then who knows?" I think everyone associated with that team, as well as the fans had the realization after that heartbreaking loss that that team just might have been good enough to have a shot at the whole thing.

I may be in the minority, but, in my view, the biggest mistake the Bills have made (other than firing Bill Polian) was firing Wade.

You guys were probably the same guys who complained that he did not wear a headset.

Perhaps you can make this argument in hindsight, but at the time, letting Wade go was the right thing to do.

Wade did a terrible job of handling the entire QB controversy over the course of the 2000 regular season. He was never clear as to who would start from week to week (those who defend Wade will say it was gamesmanship, but the look he had and his tone of voice wasn't exactly confidence-inspiring) and his lack of leadership is one of the contributing factors to the divided locker room.

He then actually hired a guy with ZERO experience to run special teams to replace one of the best of all time, then refused to fire him when it was blatantly obvious to even my dog that Ronnie Jones was in way over his head.

While the defenses were good, he never did anything to improve the offense (also a weakness of Greggo). I know Wade's a defense guy, but as HC, he needed to step up and put pressure on Joe Pendry to develop a better game plan. When you have a predictable offensive plan and then you don't know what QB is going to run it from week to week, it's a recipe for disaster.

Let's also not forget his famous prediction that the Bills & Colts were basically out of the playoff picture with 3 games left and both teams at 7-6. Indy beat the Bills that week and finished 10-6, making the playoffs. Wade's professional leadership led the Bills to be 8-8 and home for the holidays.

Wade is an excellent defensive coordinator and has done remarkable jobs wherever he has been. Two of his first three head-coaching stints have turned out mediocre at best....the 3rd is on shaky ground already, though not by his doing. Jason Garrett will be handed the job, the question is when. If Dallas gets off to a rough start, I wouldn't be surprised to see Wade gone by Week 9. Either way, it's clear that Jones wants Garrett running the ship and that won't be too far away.

Wade is a good teacher and can flat out put a very competitive 3-4 defense together. He's done it over and over again.

As a head coach, he hasn't really done much that one might classify as "special". He was a caretaker in Denver between Reeves and Shanahan and his choices in staff and systems were suspect. Elway openly ridiculed his lack of leadership and organization saying he let the team become a self-organizing circus. In Buffalo, he again stepped in to an organization that had been stable and had considerable talent. He didn't immediately drive the plane into the ground, but it has been suggested that the team that lost the Music City Miracle due to a lack of focus was perhaps the most talented and deep in the NFL at the time. Replay number three in Dallas, where Wade again saunters in to a custom made situation where Parcells had assembled a strong and deep roster. At least Jerry Jones didn't trust Wade to hire his own OC.

On the other hand, a guy like Pacman on a team with a "player's coach" sort of seems like smoking next to the gas tank...

His history suggests that he cannot win in the playoffs. Whether that's happenstance is anyone's guess.

My guess is that it's happenstance - just like it was with Cowher, Dungy, before that Landry and Madden, and about a dozen other coaches who never won in the playoffs until they won in the playoffs.

Plus the refs didn't do him/us any favors in Miami/Tennessee.

Phillips is an awful head coach. He's onnly suceeded using the previous coach's players. Here he had Marv's guys, and in Dallas he had Parcells.

That'd be a good point if he were a GM and not a coach.
