Just Jack
Former Chargers safety Terrence Kiel dies Sat Jul 5, 7:02 AM ET SAN DIEGO - Former Chargers safety Terrence Kiel was killed after he was thrown from a Chevy sedan he was driving, police said Saturday. Kiel, 27, was driving alone after leaving a party at about 10:15 Friday night when he hit a wall in San Diego's upscale Scripps Ranch neighborhood and was thrown from the car, police Sgt. Alan Hayward said. Kiel was barely breathing when paramedics reached him and he died about an hour later, Hayward said. Friends had tried to keep Kiel from driving home from the party, Hayward said, and witnesses told police he appeared to be driving in the wrong direction when he crashed. Police would not know whether Kiel had been under the influence of drugs or alcohol until toxicology tests were performed, Hayward said. A second-round draft pick out of Texas A&M in 2003, Kiel played four years in the NFL from 2003-2006, all with the Chargers. In February 2007 he pleaded guilty to felony and misdemeanor drug charges for shipping prescription cough syrup to Texas, the most significant of several scrapes with the law. He was released by the team after his plea. Kiel had been led off the practice field and arrested in the locker room by Drug Enforcement Administration agents in September 2006, suspected of shipping at least two parcels of prescription cough syrup, apparently to be mixed with soft drinks to make a concoction known as "lean." The felony charges were later dropped after he completed community service, and he was serving three years probation for the misdemeanor charges. He was cited for urinating in public outside a San Diego nightclub in January 2007, but the city dropped that charge.
HurlyBurly51
Sucks when a young person leaves us too soon. Sounds like no seatbelt, and I'd guess after leaving a party where freinds tried not to let him drive, the toxicology test will show they were right. C'mon people - get a DD, cab, limo - anything else.

Fan in San Diego
From what I can tell from the news, if any of the bystanders thought to get out a car jack then they could have propped up the car and maybe saved Keil's life. Maybe they were afraid of putting more pressure on his chest and making it worse, hard to say, but it seemed like the obvious solution.

Did'nt people get bashed for doing that with Lynch just 2 weeks ago before all the facts came out. Oh, I get it, he is not a bills player so it is okay to assume. I forgot the rules of ettiquete around here.
HurlyBurly51
Wait a minute - you aren't blaming the police? What would that have to do with this situation? There are plenty of valid examples out there to highlight police misconduct if that's what you want to do.

Because friends always try to prevent sober friends from driving home after a party, and then said sober friend drives in the wrong direction before crashing into a wall. Besides, as stated in the post, the toxicology tests will ultimately determine beyond a doubt whether or not he was drinking. HurlyBurly51
Nice try. Your M.O. is well established... Yeah, I don't like dirty cops and have said so. What does that have to do with this story? It makes about as much sense as me inserting a question as to why an old crumudgeon doesn't like fancy new technology like HD.

eball
Was another wall dancing provocatively in the street, thus distracting the stone-sober Kiel's attention away from the second wall he was about to collide with?
HurlyBurly51
Next deflection attempt, please? That was a weak one... Uh, no deflection at all. I flat out said it in my post. Yet, still wondering why you felt it appropriate to derail a thread about a young NFL player dying? One of these things is not like the other. He would have fit you in, somehow. I'm logging off soon. Report back tomorrow.
